Kindle V's Books

I thought I would treat myself today so I brought myself a Kindle 3G. I have heard lots about them so today I thought I would investigate and have a look at one.
You can get a Kindle WI FI which can be used in conjunction with your own WI FI or other internet sources but if your out of range you can't order books etc, then the 3G has built in WI FI etc so you can use it anywhere without having to have access to WI FI, so it's brilliant for abroad or places where internet may be difficult. The difference is about £40.
Well I got home, read through all the stuff about it on the Kindle and what it does, logged onto my Amazon Account and got my first book.
It's brilliant, it downloads a whole book in about one minute and the cost is taken straight off your card and the other brilliant thing is that the books are cheaper to buy this way. On the 3G it will hold up to 3,500 books.
You can also subscribe to newspapers, magazines and journals as well.
Also, when you think you might like a book, they will send you the prologue and the first couple of chapters to read to see if you would like to buy it.

I think it's brilliant and another huge plus is it saves the trees from being felled.
I do love having books and I love the jackets but I love the trees more so have decided to help save them and stop buying so many paper books.

I have thought of getting one LW. I've seen others using them, but it really does'nt appeal to me for some reason. Proberbly habit I suppose, but I love browsing in stores for Books to read, and nearly all my Books are second hand from Charity shops, and do'nt cost much at all, but at least the money I spend is helping a good cause, plus I redonate them to other Charity shops when I've read them, so I suppose both forms of reading are helping diffent causes in their own way

I bought Pete one (not a Kindle but similar) a year or two ago. He loves it although would probably prefer the Kindle now as it's more advanced he has so many books on it now.

I am with you WS - I go to the library a lot and also to our local charity bookshop (which they have just closed down). I love to read so get through plenty on the train/plane or when possible. I can't remember when I last bought a new book as our library is great and if you can't find what you want they'll order it in.

I think a Kindle does have the advantage of being able to download many books at a time, but I have decided to stick to books for a few reasons

1. I love the feel and smell of books
2. As a clumsy person who loves to read in the bath, a book can dry out
3. Books don't run out of power at the best bit of the story
4. Books will never become obsolete in a few years time or have to buy the latest version because its not compatible anymore
5. A book can be shared with a friend without them having to have a compatible device

I agree with lots of your comments. I'm a book lover too. I adore the feel and smell of books, whether they be old or new and I love the jackets that give you a flavour of the book. I have a huge collection of books and I will continue to buy second hand books as they are already out there and like lots of you I get them from charity stores as well, so i'm giving something back.
What I thought with my Kindle is to try and do a bit towards not loosing so many trees. It doesn't replace the real thing by a long shot, just a little something to try and help.
At heart I will always prefer a book to my Kindle but I do think it's a great little gadget that will help in a small way.
