Lioness & Cubs Empty Lioness & Cubs

Post  Doogs Thu Sep 22, 2011 8:48 pm

We arrived in the Masai Mara at lunch-time on Thursday 08/09/11 so just had our afternoon drive that day. Vincent knew there was a lioness with young cubs so after seeing Bahati (more on that in another thread !) we went to look for them. We found mum in the Posee Plains area of the Mara and at this time she was not with her cubs. We took a few photos of mum then went to look for the cubs which we spotted lying under a tree at the top of a river bank, all three of them and not far from mum. They weren't doing much as it was so hot so we just sat and looked at them for a while. The weather changes quickly in the Mara and it wasn't long after that the heavens opened Rain and we had to head home. It was so heavy that it started pouring in the jeep at the back and we had to use some props of water bottles to help the water run off the roof of the jeep & to stop dad from getting an early shower !!! Laughing

I must confess to worrying that night that the cubs were ok after such heavy rain so the next morning we headed back to find them. We found mum lying beside the tree where the cubs were the previous night but no cubs No pale We sat and waited a while until we got our first glance of a cub, then the second and finally the third, phew they were all ok :) We sat for ages just watching them all playing with mum (especially her tail :) ), playing with each other and at times suckling, it was a truly wonderful experience.

Vincent said the cubs were only about a month old, the youngest we have seen. He wanted to take us back to see them that morning 'because things change so quickly in the wild and you should always take the opportunity while you can', wise words Wink

Thank you so much Doogs that was a wonderful account of Mum and cubs on your first day. They are so cute and not surprised you sat and watched for a while. I would have been like you worrying about the cubs in the torrential down pore. So glad all was ok though.

So looking forward to the next instalment.

Who cares if I am at work and not supposed to be on here Very Happy I saw these pics this morning but didn't have time to reply Doogs. They are just so adorable and I love the one of them lying with mum I love you I would have had a sleepless night worrying about them too after all that Mara rain What a Face I am relieved they were all ok.
Again I am enjoying your little blog of the day, it really does give a wonderful feel of what happened on the day of the photo's.

I love you I love you I love you Laughing those are such cute photos Doogs - absolutely adorable, what a time you had, and so pleased to hear the cubs were okay after all that rain, you really did have a time of it with the weather, we were incredibly lucky it only ever rained our last 3 days at Naboisho at 6pm in the evening, and was clear by the morning.

It did mess up the sundowners though - inside the vehicle instead of outside enjoying the scenery.
