Why the wildlife of your choice?

Post  tigerburnie on Wed Oct 19, 2011 7:28 pm

Some of the debates have been quite "heavy" in content,so I thought I'd kick off something on a bit of a lighter tone.
Why and perhaps how did you come to wildlife watching?
I grew up on the edge of fields in the 1950's in the rural heart of England, took to fishing at the age of four with my Grandparents and have been at the side of water all my life since.I guess it must have been contact with wild things that stirred my interest and it's grown from there.Television introduced me to foreign wildlife and books too, whilst there's a lot of wildlife spectacles I'd love to see abroad,I am predominately a British wildlife enthusiast.Living where I do I am very fortunate to have a lot of semi wilderness close by and the associated wildlife that comes with it.
Specialising in things that live nearby and trying to find them is my current passion,Ptarmigan in their winter plummage is my current "target" to hopefully get a nice picture of.

This is a great topic TB and one I will be adding to as well. I need to think about it like Doogs, as you know I can ramble on a bit so need to keep it fairly short.

I enjoyed reading your welcome to wildlife and I really hope you get the photo of the Ptarmigan you want, fingers crossed for you.

Great choice of topic TB.

I spent all of my teens and twenties in London so am a late developer with my love for wildlife.

I think my interest in Africa probably started some years ago, I've been lucky enough to do riding safaris in Kenya and from that my interest in all wildlife/birds grew. Big Cat Diaries played a great part in getting me even more hooked. I love all wildlife programmes whether it be Africa or not, so have a wide interest in the whole world and of course the UK.

My interest in UK birds is more recent, since moving house and being able to have bird feeders I've been able to identify more of our local birds (not so good on the bird song and flight) but really enjoy watching them.

For the past couple of years I've also got into photography which has certainly helped with my enthusiasm for animals and birds.

We have farmland around us and woodland so are lucky in a lot of the wildlife we see.

That really is a very very good question TB

I did'nt get onto Wildlife till later in life, although as a Boy I lived in Cheshire, and helped out on farms, with haymaking, and egg collections. My Uncle also took me fishing when I was youing, and I did go on my own quite a bit, I really never got into it. When Big Cat Dairys started that really got me interested in African Wildlife, I loved following the series, also we got Sky, and I loved watching all the Wildlife programes on there. I got into Birds, because of an accident Mrs S had at work a few Yrs ago, ahe had a bad fall at work, and damaged the ligaments, and cartlidge in her knee. She was off work for 10 weeks, and for most of the first part unable to move much. So at the back of the dining room which had french windows looking out at the back garden, I turned it into a mini bedsit, with a lounger so her leg was at the right angle, microwave, kettle coolbox for drings, and snacks. Then I realised she would soon get bored, so I bought some wood, and made a my first Bird Table on a stand, and placed it at the top of the garden, then I got her some binoculars, and a Bird Book, and thats how we first got onto Bird watching, we started making our own bird food, and hollowed out logs to fill with it. Thats how I came to get the photos of my Whitestarling. By now we were really onto it, and Springwatch, and Autumnwatch became a must to see, also around this time I got my first computer, so now I could watch web cams as well. This year as you know I bought a new camera, and apart from the garden birds I've photographed, I have now got a lot more interested in the Birds on our coastline, as some of you will have seen from my recent posts, it really has been enjoyable finding new species that I've not seen before, proberbly because I was'nt looking.
So thats my Wildlife life story. Sorry its a bit long What a Face . So now I'm a fully paid up addict of all Wildlife. Better late than never, and making up for lost time

What I like is the days are never the same, the countryside is for ever changing, there's always another question, that you need to find the answer to(well I do,let's face it,the worlds not the nicest place to be at times, nice distraction).

I grew up in a village in North Wales, I now consider myself lucky as I grew up an area and time where we were allowed to go out and climb trees or to go out and not come back til tea time, to be honest it was encouraged so my mum could get on with her housework. I'm very lucky as I have parents that brought me up with a love and respect of nature, one of my earliest memory is of my great grandad who had converted his coal shed into an aviary where he used to keep budgies and breed them. I know now thats probably the most PC of things to do but I can remember a very gruff and scary man being so gentle towards them.

Mostly it was just going out, experiencing nature be it good and bad, and being taught to love nature. I also think its because my paternal grandad came from a long line of farmers and he had a small holding himself, by the time I was born he was too ill too work and lived in a council house but he always had a patch of garden to grow his own veg. It was the same with my maternal grandad who did the same and I remember helping him pick potatoes and he used to tell me stories. I used to go on walks with my paternal grandad and he used to tell me the names of the birds we saw and heard

I also think that because I have never been a sporty person because I don't have the best hand to eye co ordination and I'm not a competitive person then walking or bike riding was the best kind of exercise I could do and you saw so much wildlife when doing it
