Very sad news Lai.  He was a huge 'rose' man and at his house, Warren Place he created a fine private rose garden which occupied much of his leisure time flower

Congratualations to a couple of British sporting winners over the weekend.  Andy Murray for his win at Queens (sets him up nicely for Wimbledon we hope) and Justin Rose for winning the US Open last night well the early hours of this morning, that's why I've been yawning all morning !!!!

Yes a very big time for sport, with the Tour De France just five sleeps away (even though the early stages will be a bit of a Sleeping even for me Laughing) and the British Open must be on soon too?

Does anyone remember the Jean Vandevelde choke? I was much more of a golf fan back then and even still have this recorded! It must have been about a dozen years ago now, but was the one where the Frenchman blew a three shot lead on the final hole...

The commentator - Peter Allis - was the real star though. "He's gone ga-ga!"

Peter Allis did really funny commentary GR, it was the only reason I ever watched golf, he made me laugh so much.

Wimledon's started and I haven't seen any yet, may have to skip a few hours each afternoon so I can watch it.

Did'nt see it all myself either Lai, just the last set. Nadal was definitely carrying an injury, and they say he's going to have to look at his future on grass, its not a surface that's good for his knees

That's such a shame, he's a great player, but what a shock for everyone.  He seems to have carried this injury for some time now.  I have to say I am not so interested in the women's tennis so am not that bothered about watching it all but will try to catch some of it.

Of course I remember Jean van de Velde GR, his 'collapse' in the 2008 Open Golf Championship at Carnoustie allowed our very own (i.e. he's from Aberdeen) Paul Lawrie to eventually win in a play off cheers
At least he's smiling  . . .

"Oh Jean, Jean, Jean, Jean..." Laughing

Great pic Doogsy!

It was certainly longer ago than 2008, but for sure Paul Lawrie won it in grand style Very Happy

There was some incredible rough at that Carnoustie course affraid

I would be lucky to get around that place in less than 200 shots lol!

The women's tennis thing is a little funny! Well I have always thought that morally they should get the same amount of money as the men, at least if they played best of five sets (now that's another discussion!). But you girls have both pointed out the big issue in all of this. Why do women in sport get paid less than their male counterparts? Because women themselves don't want to watch them. That to me has always been the end of the argument, because for example, a female basketballer works just as hard and is just as talented as the male player, but they can't and shouldn't ever earn as much money as the men because their just isn't the viewing demand. Sport is after all, in the entertainment industry, and it is really just a supply and demand thing. I might think that a particular band is better than another, but if they are only playing their live show to 50 people than I can't expect them to reap the financial rewards of a lesser group that plays to 5,000. But back to women's sport. There are a lot of women who just like to watch the men play; if they want this unequal pay to change then they need to start watching the woman!

It all evens out in the end. I've put my hand up on numerous occasions to be a well paid model for sports illustrated, but apparently those million dollar gigs are only available to the fairer sex Laughing

Yes,  to Andy for the Wimbledon crown; for me not so much for the man himself, but would be a nice moment for Britain to have "the ultimate strange" occur Very Happy

The bus thing in the cycling was one out of the box! Australians are obviously not great drivers Laughing There was a very funny photo of the bus driver with head in his hands and beside him was a blow up kangaroo doll laying on the dashboard! I think it was just a misunderstanding with the height of the overhead finish line thingy not being high enough for the bus to get through it. An old fashioned cock up! Tomorrow night there should simply be great racing in the mountains, so hopefully no shonky drivers, no bike crashes, and the climbers will speak for themselves.

 WS!

Last nights cycling stage was epic (even if my favourite rider finished five minutes down affraid ), so was up until the wee small hours of the morning. Very big time gaps amongst the favourites...dominated by Sky...Froome and Porte to go 1-2 confused

I switched across a few times and caught some of the women's final, which didn't seem to be much of a match. The German girl was having a tough time and got pretty emotional (I don't mind people getting emotional in public though, all good), so it was a little sad to see her distressed. But good on the Italian woman Bartoli for winning Wimbledon and I'm sure that in time Lisseki will be very proud to have been a finalist.

Big night tonight with men's final and another high mountain stage in the Pyrenees.
