Job Hunting
Well I've got my first interview on Monday which isnt bad going as I was only made redundant 2 weeks ago
The problem is its the same type of work I used to do, its an hour away by bus (dont have access to a car at the mo) and its a lot less money, so I don't really want to job.
My decision, if I get offered the job, do I accept it and keep on looking or turn it down and hope I get a job I do want.
My redundancy money will keep me going for about 9 months but I'd rather save it up than spend it on bills.
What does everyone else think?

Re: Job Hunting
That's a tough call PPH. Do you go with your heart or your head?
Go for the interview because it's good to get the practice and can't hurt if you decide you don't want the job.
For me my heart rules everytime - the job you really want is there, and I am sure you will find it.

ps I know it's easy to comment when I'm not in the same situation so plenty before deciding, which I am sure you are. Oh and well done for getting the interview, brilliant news.

Re: Job Hunting
I'm pretty much going to go with my heart as I need to take a chance that a job I want is out there.
The midland office of the RSPB is in Banbury where I live and I have checked on their site and they want someone to work their voluntary for 2 days a week doing admin work. I'm thinking that I could do this voluntary work and get some experience working for a charity again and hopefully some jobs will come up for me

Re: Job Hunting
That sounds like a really good idea PPH and certainly good experience to volunteer for a couple of days a week. Still a really tough call though.

Re: Job Hunting
I think its just overriding the panic of thinking that I'll never get a job and picking the first one that comes along. I said when I found out I was going to be made redundant that this will be a new start for me and I am going to do something worthwhile and that I want to do
Still scary though

Re: Job Hunting
I've always thought you stand a better chance of getting a Job if your in one, but I once did a job I hated, and I have to say it was mind destroying, and I would'nt want to do it again. I think that if you were doing voluntary work a prospective employer would look at that as being in work, and at least you would be happy, and thats worth alot. At the end of the day PPH its your decision, but having experienced it I know what I would do.

Re: Job Hunting
I know I would hate it and as great as it is a boost to my confidence to get an interview I know that even before the end of the first week I would be hating it with a vengence.
A friend of mine who has also been made redundant has got a job in a debt collection agency and wants me to come and work with her. I couldnt do that type of work so I said no
Here is the link to the volunteer job at the RSPB its so right up my street

Re: Job Hunting
I used to work for an environmental charity about 8yrs ago before I started working for the company Ive just been made redundant from. The kind of work I used to do was pretty much the same and more as this voluntary position.
I've emailed the person today and hopefully I'll hear back from her soon

Re: Job Hunting
Went around to see the RSPB people this morning and I'm going to start doing one day a week helping out with administrating their pin badge scheme where volunteers go around and leave collection boxes and badges in garden centres/shops etc.
I'm really looking forward to it as itll be nice to do something that makes a difference again

Re: Job Hunting
That's wonderful news PPH - it will be great to help make a difference and the RSPB is a wonderful charity.
I bet you will really enjoy it and hopefully it will lead on to a full time job in due course.
When do you start?

Re: Job Hunting
Thats great news, I was looking at some of the wildlife trusts etc. with jobs on their sites and thought of you. So pleased for you and it will be great experience. Any other perspective employers like to see initiative so this is a good organisation to get in with. You will have to keep us uptodate with it all.

Well done PPH, I am sure Tuesday will be fine and they will be so glad to have you I have no doubt about that.
Pleased you decided to go with your heart, it's usually the right way to go as we are often at our happiest. I wish you well.

Re: Job Hunting
I'm off for my first afternoon at the RSPB office tomorrow. Really looking forward to it and I've been busy learning as many of the birds on their pin badges so I make sure I send out the right ones when they are ordered.
I'll let you all know how I get on

Re: Job Hunting
thanks for all the messages
I was only there for 2 hrs this afternoon but they want me to come back tomorrow and work 10-2
They are all really nice and even though I spent the day sorting their pin badges into the species and bagging them up. It was a worthwhile thing to do and it was nice to get out of the flat and do something rather than watch daytime tv

Re: Job Hunting
Thats great PPH, and its good they have asked you back so soon, for double the time. It really does you good to get out doing something, it keeps your brain cells going, and gives you something to look forward to. I know I was out of work for over 12 months due to injury, and could'nt go back to my previous job. It really does help to do something like your doing, it keeps your chin up, and motivated, plus your working for such a good cause
