Will they or won't they???

After yesterdays announcement that MPs have backed the call to ban wild animals in circus' (not an outright ban). Do you think one person appointed to run the country should make MPs u-turn for their own agenda?

I dont mean it to sound like Im pushing any political view I have so please do not take it that way. The ban on wild animals in circus' is a very big issue.

I haven't seen the news or the result on the vote so can't comment yet but for my own part would support a total ban on all circus animals.

Political views aside as you say SM. No I dont think its right on something like this, who ever is running the Country should take the overwhelming views of the British Public into account. I fear that the Goverment is worried about what will happen in the EU courts when the Circus owners, start talking about their Human Rights. There I'm going to have to stop, or I my get carried away

Just caught up on this and not sure I can be polite about politicians and 3 line whips etc. It should have been a free vote.

I am going to stop as well WS - I'm right off politics at the moment Shocked

Sadly it's a case of mans treatment of animals that's the problem, keeping animals is something most of us do.
Circus and Zoos were my introduction to wild animals,I don't know if they mis-treated animals in the 1950's and '60's.Clearly time has moved on,world travel is more available and our knowledge of animals has moved forwards too.
Captive breeding of endangered species is showing to have clear benefit to both the species concerned and to our understanding of what is required to maintain habitats.
So in a nutshell,no need for "wild" animals in a circus, definately no need for any kind of mis-treatment of any animals.I'd like to see the keeping of animals subject to a licence and training,be it a Canary,Cat,Dog, or snake(even the experts can get in trouble,as I see that chap was killed by a Cobra).

I agree TB - we are now better informed than other generations and there is no excuse for mis treatment of any animals/birds/mammals.

I agree to TB. Our generation are now better informed than ever before. Whether it be through travel or the media, and there is never any excuse for miss treatment, and that includes Pets. Licenceing, and training is an exellant idea for everone who keeps animals whatever they are

Sorry I have not seen the news or any newspapers on this at all, so can't really comment on the political view......I hate politics anyway. However, the mis treatment of animals is something that will really make my blood boil and am never to shy to shout about.
I believe there are some very good captive breeding programmes that are genuinely saving species but I do have my doubts about some......by that I mean there is often a monetary link to them. Some Zoos and wildlife parks do definiately promote education for the wildlife and their habitat and thats a good thing as I do believe it will help generations after us to really love and respect all animals and become an advocot for them.
Circus animals I whole heartedly do not believe in and I pray there will be a total ban and that we will stop being worried about the EU and for once stand up for what is right and stop being so nancy about it, otherwise we are saying its ok to let animals suffer and be mistreated as long as it doesn't have a back lash on us.
With regards to licencing, you used to have to have a dog licence but it wasn't very much. I would surely support an act that said all pet owners should have a licence for any pet and I think vets should be involved in maintaining that owners were looking after their pets health and welfare properly and it should be a stipulation on the licence that the pets should be seen by a vet at least once or twice a year and your licence stamped or it is at risk of being revoked. That may sound hard but I do believe our pets should have the right to regular health checks.
In my mind, circuses should be about clowns, tight rope walkers, jugglers etc and definiately not performing wild animals. The general public can make their feelings and views known to the polititions but we can not put a permanent ban in place, only they can and it's about time they stepped up to the mark and stopped being so pathetic.

Hi all

I am sick of the politicians over here just moving their lips without any feeling or commitment to anything they say.

BUT.... i agree we are so well informed these days, there is no excuse for the mistreatment of any animal, whether it be cattle in abbatoirs, dogs on puppy farms, pet shops, circus animals, dog fights, the melbourne carriage horses etc.

I have never been to a circus fullstop not even as a kid as my mother was against animals in circuses even back then.

I pray for the day the cruelty will end.
