"Well, after a chat with Jonathan Scott ...He is positive that KIKE is NOT the mother to Malaika..He went on to say that Kike only managed to raise 3 cubs to maturity...She went missing 2004/2005 and we dont think malaika is that Old" .... Thanks Jonny

Those are fantstic photos, thanks for the link LW.

I read on FB that her son has been called Bawa which is Swahili for 'wing'. Malaika (means 'Angel' in Swahili) had two cubs (her angel wings) but lost one so hence the use of Bawa being singular. I think it's a nice name for the cub Very Happy

From Mara Meru Cheetah's PG Page - Saturday 26 July 2104

Elusive “angel” Malaika has disappeared for a reason! We found her nursing cubs. Let’s hope she has learned from her past experiences and will raise cubs despite the presence of several young lions roaming in the same field.

Apparently Malaika has had 6 cubs  I love you  Like a Star @ heaven  I love you  Like a Star @ heaven  I love you

From Mara Meru Cheetah's FB Page on Thursday 31st July 2014

Three days ago, Malaikas’s cubs survived a long heavy rain. After a successfull hunt, Malaika was eating for 2 hours even under a downpour. When she was done eating, her belly took the shape of a basketball. After several hours of absence, she found her cubs drenched in water, whistling and trying to get out of the clogged den. It took her 10 minutes to move them out to another bush. After licking them thoroughly, she began nursing. The food she ate, was enough just for two days, and yesterday she hunted again.

Running wild! Mother cheetah has SIX cubs keeping her busy by
jumping, hiding and climbing all over her

The six cheetah cubs and their mother were playing in the Masai Mara when spotted by a wildlife photographer
Majed Sultan Ali was on his second visit to the game reserve in a bid to photograph a coalition of cheetahs
He saw the family playing with each other while practicing their hunting and stalking skills  for life on the plains
Unfortunately, one of the six cubs later died, possibly having being attacked by a larger animal such as a lion

Re: Malaika

Post  Doogs on Thu Oct 30, 2014 1:33 pm

From Margot Raggett Photography via Facebook :-

Wow, just had the most memorable and dramatic morning!

We started early with a plan to return to the area that the cheetah Malaika and her five cubs had been seen yesterday. At first all we found though were lions and we knew it was unlikely the cheetah would be in the same area as other such dangerous predators, so we decided to drive and check out the two male lions we could see in the distance.

Suddenly they were on alert running in our direction and had clearly spotted something we hadn't. We drove back behind us where they were looking and found a large group of hyenas chasing Malaika and her cubs. One hyena was eating and for a heart-stopping moment we thought it had caught a cub but then thankfully we counted all five. We think it had taken a kill from Malaika.

The hyenas continued to pursue the cubs however so we radioed for help and in the meantime did our best to drive the hyenas away, circling around them to block their route and from time to time my guide Henry Sadera was even getting out of the vehicle to wave and roar furiously at them. A couple of other cars eventually came to help and after about twenty minutes the hyenas thankfully gave up.

We spent the rest of the morning following a very nervous Malaika and the cubs as she moved them more than 8km we estimate. All was well in the end, although Henry realised along the way that at some point when he was out waving his arms in fury at the hyenas his phone must have dropped to the floor. Though we looked we couldn't find it when we went back to the original area sadly...
Here was a moment of pause on the long relocation of this morning...phew!

An interesting/lively debate about Margot's 'intervention'
by trying to stop the hyenas getting to the cubs :-
