Animal Symbols Of Countries
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_animals
I think this is an interesting list to scroll through. I am halfway through it.
There are heaps of lions in Belgium and Bulgaria
But it's a good list to maybe find out about some animals we otherwise would not.

Re: Animal Symbols Of Countries
I never knew there were wolves in Italy. Or that there were these creatures that existed: Raccoon Dogs!
The African leopard is represented in Rwanda and Somalia. Yay! And the giraffey in Tanzania
Leopard associates are actually very popular, with the snow leopard in Afghanistan and jaguars adopted by many nations.
Iran certainly loves its cats
Still, there are just too many 'needy' nations adopting the lion for my liking when they don't even have them Especially from Europe!
I will cut the UK a little slack though, as I love that Scotland has adopted the unicorn

What a fascinating list and a great find GR. I had a quick scroll through so need a better look later. Typical that the UK has more than anyone else and also some mythical creatures!
I've never seen a raccoon dog before
Good to learn lots of new stuff today, thanks GR.

What a brilliant find GR I had not heard of a Raccoon Dog either so I too have learnt something today.
I love the Blue Magpie of Taiwan but I was so pleased to see in the UK one of my all time favourites, the Red Fox

Re: Animal Symbols Of Countries
everyone for the thread appreciation
I am a little fearful that my animal conversation is running out though, and soon it will just be Bella this, Bella that
No birds on the feeder yet either. But just had some brief excitement! Bella wanted to go outside (I don't have a doggy door ) so up I got, and then I checked the backyard window and there was a different sort of birdie; not a parrot though. But it flew from the ground - where I've just layed out bread - up to the clothesline. It was about a metre from the feeder! But false alarm as Mr Birdie departed.
Lai, I kinda like mythical creatures. In fact I wouldn't mind each country having one as a symbol, as well as one or two real ones. I am not sure what Australia would have for this, except for perhaps the Tasmanian Tiger, because now extinct, I suppose it is sort of mythical
So Australia did kinda have a 'big cat', though in the pics I've seen the TT looks more tapia like than asian tiger.
Maybe an aboriginal folk legend creature for Australia's mythical symbol could be used? I think they spoke of a river snake or something, and snakes are as Australian as kangaroos!
The red fox is beautiful LW. I believe that it has a noble look, which I also see in the leopard. They must be very
Not as royal as the gyrfalcon though. I was reading about this after seeing it as Iceland's symbol, and historically 'people of importance' would have them as pets, walking around with them on their wrists, and so forth. I am learning some stuff!
Anyhoo, the Queen hasn't got around to chopping my head off yet, so I'm confident that I will come up with some more cookie cool conversation for this forum

Re: Animal Symbols Of Countries
Lai, do your feed your red fox visitor? If so, what food?
Lookelikey - it's amazing how much one letter can change the reading of a word!
And although Wales already has its dragon, I am sure that the WAA will come up with a mythical creature to represent your good self WS. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Animal Symbols Of Countries
Sometimes we put out raisins and peanuts GR for the badgers and foxes. Problem is the birds and squirrels help themselves! I generally only put out some food if I am trying to get some photos on the trail cam otherwise I don't.
I'm going to try for the fox tonight and see what happens.
Lai
As for representing WS or did you mean Wales ???

Oh my word Littlewid, that's a real fusion and brilliant. WS the Foxrobin - kind of weird looking and very surreal
Oh and GR on closer inspection I have no idea why it had bees on it - it was definitely supposed to be beer!

Lai, the bees thing: I don't mean to get you into trouble with your man at home, but could it be that you think WS is sweet?
Now I am borrowing the phrase, "You know that I don't like to cause trouble."

Re: Animal Symbols Of Countries
Re: Bees on Boddington beer can. Boddington Beer was brewed in the City of Manchester untill March 12th this year, and the Bees come from the City's coat of arms.
Coat of arms
Gules, three bendlets enhanced Or; a chief argent, thereon on waves of the sea a ship under sail proper. On a wreath of colours, a terrestrial globe semée of bees volant, all proper. On the dexter side a heraldic antelope argent, attired, and chain reflexed over the back Or, and on the sinister side a lion guardant Or, murally crowned Gules; each charged on the shoulder with a rose of the last. Motto: "Concilio et Labore"A coat of arms was granted to the Borough of Manchester in 1842 and Manchester was granted the title of city in 1853.[5]
The Shield: red (Gules) with three gold (Or) bands drawn diagonally across to the right hand side.
The Chief (the white (Argent) top segment): shows a ship at sea in full sail. This is a reference to the city's trading base.
The Crest: On a multicoloured wreath stands a terrestrial globe, signifying Manchester's world trade, and covered by a swarm of flying bees. The bee was adopted in the 19th century as a symbol of industrial Manchester being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
So there you go Guys you learn something everyday. I did'nt know that either.
GR I'm a real cunning super smoothie thats why have such nice fur, and feathers
