The Western Lowland Gorilla
Western Lowland Gorilla Conservation
Location Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, Gabon
Until recently, conservationists had been less concerned about the long-term future of the western lowland gorilla, as they have been protected by their vast forest, and the natural boundary it creates between them and their human neighbours. However, as the logging industry engulfs the forest, bringing roads, hunters and disease, the long-term future of the western lowland gorilla has been flung into uncertainty.
During 2008, Gorilla Organization staff travelled to Gabon where they conducted a needs anaylsis on the western lowland gorilla population of the Moukalaba-Doudou National Park and the surrounding communities. The Gorilla Organization is now looking to build on the success it has had in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo through the implemention of a community conservation programme as and when funds become available.
