Elephant Emergency Chad
Just had this email
Dear John,
I’ve just learned that 86 elephants -- 33 of them pregnant females -- have been gunned down by poachers in the Central African country of Chad.
The image above is from a similar slaughter last year. The ivory tusks have been hacked out and stolen. The ivory will be sold on the black market, and then eventually carved into products nobody needs.
Entire elephant families – even the pregnant mothers – brutally killed…to make ivory trinkets?
It’s heartbreaking and senseless…and it HAS TO STOP.

Thanks WS. Shocking, horrible, brutal and senseless and tragic.
I really don't know what the answer to this endless poaching is.

What sad, shocking news Bad enough any elephant but 33 pregnant ones
I agree Lai, just don't know how we're going to stop this barbaric poaching

Re: Elephant Emergency Chad
Depressing.
Elephants used to migrate during the dry season from Central African Republic to Chad and to Cameroon. Thirty years ago they were estimated to be 150,000 animals across the region, but today that figure is estimated to be around 2,000.
Here in South Africa we are getting seriously worried that the good work done to manage our elephant populations will make us the next targets. It has already stared at our neighbors in Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
The poachers are "running out" of animals in Central Africa and West Africa and will soon direct their efforts to South Africa.

Latest update from IWAF about Chad
Dear John,
In the e-mail I sent you last week, I told you of the horrific slaughter of 86 elephants - 33 of them pregnant females.
Well it's worse than we originally thought.
Our team has found more dead elephants - including two more moms-to-be.
In the next couple of weeks, IFAW is going to begin training anti-poaching rangers to protect elephants in Chad and Cameroon.
With you on our side, I know we can win the fight against ivory poachers.
Thank you,
Jason Bell
IFAW Program Director, Elephants

Re: Elephant Emergency Chad
Thanks for the latest update WS. I find it so upsetting and distressing, soon the eles, the rhinos, the tigers and the lions will be no more.

Poaching
The wholesale slaughter of elephants and rhinos just to get tusks/horn for whatever reason is barbaric and sickens me to the core. I'm guessing the only solution is going to be education of those demanding it to reduce the demand, because while the demand is high, the poachers aren't going to stop, and the destruction of these beautiful creatures will only end with their demise, and that isn't something I want to contemplate.

Re: Elephant Emergency Chad
The problem is that by the time the Chinese, and others come to realise that there will be none of the worlds iconic endangered animals left. It really is so sad

Re: Elephant Emergency Chad
Signed,
During a time period of a decade between 1979 and 1989 poaching cut the African elephant population in half. Then the population decreased from 1.3 million to only 600,000.
It won't take much to wipe them out completely this time.

Always good to remind us though WS. There are so many petitions around that it's hard sometimes to remember which ones have been signed
