This year we made a new wildlife pond in the garden, it's only just been finished so we are very chuffed that 2 females have 2 and 4 chicks and are living on the pond - the mothers fly out to go to the river to feed and then fly in again, they also like, as do the chicks the ground food I put down for the birds, pheasants, p'fers et al.

Here's a few photos, not too close as they are very timid still.

Mrs D with 2 chicks last thing at night coming for food.

Thanks Doogs.  I have better photos of them on the pond but for some reason I couldn't upload/download them.  Will try again shortly, okay we're on a roll just now.

Loving the new duckhouse, I bet that will get used lot and if that was my pond I will be there all the time peeping at them all day long.

Lovely photos Lai, lets hope the chicks survive. No male mallards around? As long as the hippo doesn't wake up, the chicks should be OK!!!! Perhaps next year you could put a remote camera in the Duckhouse to see what transpires, it could make for some interesting photos.

Thanks everyone.  What an ace idea Safariman, we'll try that for sure.

Thankfully the male mallards are on the river and not around at the moment, although one did pop in a couple of days ago.  All 6 chicks are doing well, although the 2 belonging to one Mrs D are smaller they are quite fast when they need to be.  We are so hoping all 6 survive.

We got the hippo at the RHS Flower show at Tatton Park last year, or maybe the year before and we've been waiting for somewhere to put him.   My mum had the idea and we think he looks great there, a little different I agree!

We've also got lots of beautiful dragon flies on the pond, far too fast to photo but some stunning colours.  Hopefully we'll attract more wildlife once the pond is well established.

I've got some more photos and will upload them later.

Lai

Just a few more, not on the pond but around the feeders, sometimes we have ducks, pheasants and one p'fer at the same time, it gets complicated with the hierarchy as one Mrs D in particular doesn't tolerate anyone near her chicks!

Fizal looking a little tired and jaded.  He and the hen pheasant have been mating this week, so maybe some little pheasants soon

I think your Mum deserves a You the man  for the Hippo idea Lai, what a clever lady, he is perfect and looks so at home there in the pond. I would never have imagined they would have sold or commissioned anything like that at the RHS Flower show, what a great idea as some people do have large gardens for them to settle into nicely.

Loving all the pics and it's great to see Fizal again, lets keep our fingers crossed that there will be some little ones soon bounce  Those chicks are just so cute aren't they and sounds as if the mums are doing a grand job of protecting them.

Thanks Littlewid.  It's amazing what you can find at flower shows.  We're off to Tatton this Thursday for the RHS show and hoping for slightly cooler weather so my mum doesn't over heat.  We take a picnic with us and some Pimms as well as plenty of water and enjoy a slow walk round the floral marquee as well as all the other bits and pieces.  Who knows what we may find this year Very Happy

Sadly we think the baby P'fers may not have made it, before we left for Shetland Persephone had lots (maybe 7 or Cool with her and when we returned we couldn't find her or any chicks.  Ptolemy is around but on his own, perhaps that is a good sign and it means she is safe with her young but I really don't know.

Ducklings on our new wildlife pond 768480 Loving the photos Lai thanks, it's brilliant you have done the pond, and your going to get so much enjoyment from it, and thw wildlife benifits so much from things like this. The Hippo was a great idea, wonder what you'll find at the show at Tatton ?

Oh no, how sad is that Lai, lets hope as you say that as Ptolemy is around and on his own that is a sign that she has more chicks. It is just heartbreaking that these wonderful birds have all these chicks and then they dont survive.

I hope you have a lovely time at Tatton on Thursday and that is is a wee bit cooler, I have heard tonight that we may be in for temps of 95 - 100 tomorrow affraid  I really hope not but they do say it may be a little cooler towards the end of the week, so you and your mum may be lucky Lai.

I am very interested to hear what you may bring back with you on Thursday bounce

Have a lovely time.

Thanks WS. We are already loving the pond and watching who comes for a look.

Wow Littlewid, you've got it bad in the south, our temperatures are much much cooler, and today it's lovely so far with some cloud cover as well.  Thursday it may rain What a Face but it will also be cooler so good for walking round.

I'll let you know if we find anything interesting - I have to resist buying seeds and plants but love to have a good look Very Happy
