Wild white horses of the Camargue - October 2013
It's taken me ages to put this together, 2409 pics was totally mad and now I am down to 374 and still sorting but here is a quick 2.55 slideshow of the magnificent wild white horses from the marshes.
I will post some individual photos and a bit of chat about the trip tomorrow.
It's better on full screen but loses a lot of the quality, perhaps that's Youtube!

Absolutely brilliant sequence Lai, and I love the music you, you've chosen to go with it. They are really beautiful Animals, and I love the way their manes flow in the wind, it gives you a true sense of their wildness, and freedom.
Hope you dont mind I increased the size of your frame, after you said it looses some quality on full screen, I can make it a bit bigger if you want, thought it might make a balance between full screen, and the frame on here.

Thanks WS. I didn't get round to thinking about that as on my PC or laptop I look at it on full size via Lightroom and don't lose the quality!
Some of the sequence of the gardians and horses are shot at 1/30th to try and show the speed of the horses.
We spent a morning and then an evening with the wild white horses, who are looked after by the gardians. They are truly magnificent and beautiful to spend time with. We wished we had spent the 3 days photographing them, and hope to go back in May 2015 when they have their foals with them.
Serge took this photo of me trying to photograph one of the horses - note the very fashionable waders they hired for me although the horses are wild they are very gentle and very inquisitive.
At the end of the day our group with the gardians who were superb.
Ali and I rode with one of the gardians for 2 hours on our last afternoon through the marshes taking a few mares to another area, and it was an amazing experience, we were given cake and wine (passed on the wine) whilst riding through a farm, it was tempting to spend the afternoon with them That is something I would certainly do again.
The experience of a group of wild horses riding straight towards you at speed (whilst standing knee deep in marshy water) is one I surely won't forget and really hope we can do again.

Ali and I spent 3 days in this beautiful area of France staying in the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes the old town being surrounded by a wall and very picturesque. We were a group of 4, + Lesley Woods who is a superb wildlife photographer (and luckily for me a Canon person) and Serge who was running the course and is a Nikon photographer. Whilst we were there they had their festival, which seemed to be herding a bull or two through the main streets with outriders. Not something I enjoyed watching as it seemed pointless and I imagine stressful and unpleasant for the bulls. However, it is their tradition and they weren't bull fighting. The Camargue, a magic word, is a place where man lives alongside horses, bulls, birds, the sky and water.
The magic of this region lies in the preservation of it natural spaces. It is a fragile sanctuary for fauna and flora, uncommon in Europe; protected by the Camargue regional park and natural reserve, it forms a unique landscape. Moreover, it is as a natural space of world interest that Arles is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Lai I looked at your slideshow earlier and its just spectacular, it truely is and to be honest I could have watched it for longer, its beautiful and WS is right, the music fitted it so well. The horses are just stunning arent they. I really love the last still picture of them running towards you, its so alive. How lovely to have spent time with them and also for you and Ali to ride with the gardians whilst they were moving the horses, what an experience. It looks as if it was an all girl group that went, thats really nice to have a real girlie time and spending so much time with those magnificent horses. I like the meaning behind the name Camargue, it sounds so idyllic and makes you want to go there.
Thank you for taking so much trouble putting that together, I really loved it..........and you wear waders well!

Littlewid and for your kind comments, especially re the waders
I was tempted to make it longer but horses aren't everyone's thing so thought a short slideshow was best! I may do another one with just horses eventually as I will never tire of looking at them, each one was so expressive as they ran passed us.
Yes we were 5 girls (one being our teacher from the UK and who lives near me, handy for some lessons) and Serge who is a Frenchman and who runs the courses. You know how we like to

Thanks Lai for some really lovely shots of your visit. I thibk you look quite fashionable in your waders, nice pose I bet its amazing to stand there with the Horses galloping towards you, think I would have been trembling in my waders on that one, camera shake a defo. That would be fantastic if you and Ali went back to see them with foals. I think any shots in black and white, would be a very good choice they would look really dramatic.

They are lovely Lai, gives a different perspective to the shots, and a great effect. Having started photography using black, and white, I really like to see people trying some shots out instaed of just shooting off loads of shots with out thinking.
Thanks fo the photos Lai

Re: Wild white horses of the Camargue - October 2013
Lai those are simply stunning, as I said before, there is so much more depth to black and white photos and they go to prove it.
A friend of mine is off to London next week for a bit of culture and one of the things she is going to is the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition and I tell you any of those pictures could be in the exhibition, they are fantastic and that last head shot looks as if it could be a pencil drawing, its spectacular.

The black and white photos do add something Lai. A sense of timelessness I think. Good job WS for highlighting this thread.
If your broadband decides to start behaving itself Lai, then please post some more :-)

Re: Wild white horses of the Camargue - October 2013
Lovely slideshow Lai with some great photos of the horses particularly the ones of them galloping through the water. Its great to be able to shoot at eye level or just below instead of having to look down on animals from a vehicle. The result is always more dramatic. I also love the black and white shots as the colouring of the horses make them particularly suitable. I have tried a few monochrome shots myself on my last trip and it is finding the right subject as not all subjects are suitable. When I started the slide show I half expected to hear the theme music from the early 1970's tv show "White Horses" sung I think by a one hit wonder Jacky!!
I look forward to seeing some photos when you have time to post them.

Safariman, glad you enjoyed it. Funnily enough I did love that programme and thought about the music for the slideshow, but I do love Nina Simone.
You are so right about black and white and the right subject, the horses lend themselves perfectly and it's fun experimenting.
Safari verhicles are great but sometimes when it is safe to get out, lying on the ground is a lovely way to get a different perspective.

Ooooh Lai, I knew you had done this just before I left but didn't have time to watch it . . . . it was certainly worth waiting for You know how much I adore horses so absolutely loved that and that is is something I would love to see for myself. Great music and I loved how you alternated between colour & black/white in yor sequence of shots.
To photograph all those horses running straight at you must have been both heart stopping and exhilarating at the same time Loved that shots at the end of the clip with the reflections of the horses on the water, just stunning. You shoud definitely go back when they have had foals, it would be totally amazing to see that.
"The Camargue, a magic word, is a place where man lives alongside horses, bulls, birds, the sky and water" - now how idyllic does that sound

Doogs, so pleased you enjoyed it and seeing all those truly beautiful wild horses. It certainly was exhilarating being so close to them and an experience I shall always remember.
I also loved the reflections in the late afternoon, they were almost perfect in the lovely lemon light. We think it may be May 2015 when we return and I will surely take another 2000+ photos!
