From the Marsh Pride of Lions FB Page - 7th April 2014

Siena receives a nasty wound from a buffalo horn

Siena was injured on her left lower flank on Friday by a buffalo horn. Siena has 3 cubs that are 2 and a half months old so the lives of 4 individual lions were at stake. The wound was deep with the skin sheath being fleeced but no perforations to the stomach wall or any bone dislocation.

Governors Camp driver guides found her with the injury at 09.30am and immediately alerted the Rangers, we also made contact with the David Sheldrick Wildlife foundation that mobilized the vet in Nairobi and arranged a plane to fly the vet to the Mara.

The veterinarian Dr Njoroge from the Kenya Wildlife service's landed at Musiara airstrip at 2.41 pm. Treatment started at 3.50pm when she was darted. Moments later a sub-adult Lioness promptly sauntered up to Siena who was still standing while the drug was taking effect and pulled the dart out of her with her teeth.

The Narok County council officers were present and members of staff from Governors Camp who organized transport.

The lioness was treated and stitched effectively which took approximately 1½ hours. 48 hours later we found Siena 2 kms on from were she had been treated and she was doing remarkably well, she was walking with her cubs and also squatting to pee, all good signs, we only hope that she continues to improve.

Sincere thanks to the effective response from the The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, The medical team from the Kenya Wildlife services, and the assistance of the Narok County Council and Governors' camp staff.

Without intervention it is certain that Siena would not have survived this injury and her cubs would also have been in jeopardy.

I know some don't agree with mans interference but when this is a healthy lioness who has very young cubs and Lions are on the decrease I think it's right that we step in to help save them, so I am very pleased they did this for Siena and her cubs.

It's great that she seems to be doing well and lets hope that continues and great thanks to all who have been thanked in the article  cheers

Loved the fact another lioness pulled out the dart.....obviously trying to help her friend as well  I love you

Thanks for that Doogs, its a shame she has been hurt but great she is now on the mend and can look after her precious cubs.

I've just noticed that I didn't put on the link to the pictures which really are worth looking at. I will do it tomorrow lunchtime as I'm on my iPad at mum & dads just now (my footie team are on the TV tonight so watching the game with my dad) & don't know how to copy & paste the link using it !

Totally agree LW re Siena's friend pulling the dart out of her, bless  I love you

Wow that really is some wound  affraid What a brilliant job they all did between them, and I agree as Lions are now endangered we should intervene, and especially as she has Cubs we need every Lion.

Saw this on FB and so relieved that humans did interfere. Siena had a nasty wound and is a precious lioness, as they all are.

Siena gets a nasty wound 768480 WS for posting the link. One of the worst wounds I have seen and Siena would not have lasted any amount of time had the vets not intervened, infection would have set in very quickly in a wound that size. Thank goodness she appears to be doing great after getting 'patched up'.

Update on Siena

Good news Marsh Pride Lioness Siena seems to be much better today. Her wound is healing and she does not seem to be in any major discomfort. She is nursing her cubs which is a good sign and feeding well. The Marsh pride had killed a cow buffalo yesterday. We will continue to monitor her on a daily basis - photos and update courtesy of Patrick Reynolds Governors Il Moran Camp Manager.

From Governors Camp FB Page - 15th April 2014

More Treatment for Siena

Yesterday afternoon Kenya Wildlife Services Vet Dr Limo arrived to assess Siena, he decided that the wound needed further treatment, Siena was darted and her wound was cleaned out, antibiotics were administered and the wound covered. It seems as though there is still a big hole on one side, whilst elsewhere the deeper levels are healing but the surface levels are taking much longer, added to this she is scratching and biting at it and picking out the stitches. Given the severity of the initial injury, it is inevitable that this wound will take a long time to heal, but the Rangers, Kenya Wildlife Services Veterinary team, Governors Camp Guides and David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust team are doing all they can to support this.

That wound 5really does look nasty, and is clearly taking some healing, but great respect to KWS for once in providing vets to help. Fingers X the next treatment will be successful

WS you can find updates on Sienna on "The Marsh Pride" Facebook page.
It would appear that the injury is very serious and not responding to treatment as every time they try and stitch the wound up, Sienna removes the stitches herself and then licks off all the skin surrounding it.
Unfortunately there appears to be (as usual ) a lot of misinformed opinion on Facebook from people who should know better. She has already been darted three times in a short space of time and the side effects of the tranquiliser on her suckling cubs is not known She is a wild animal and it is not easy to treat her however much people expect an instant cure to be available. Also there is the cost of ongoing treatment as there are not infinite resources available, flying in vets and all their equipment is not cheap. It might be a case of letting the wound take its course whatever the outcome might be. Even anti-biotics to stop any infection could be harmful to the cubs. Sadly when lions attack buffalo there is always a chance of injury that is just the luck of the draw in the wild.

WS - The Marsh Pride of Lions FB Page is quite good for updates :-
https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Marsh-Pride-of-Lions/195784723788967

The link below is a true and accurate update from those who are currently treating Siena, there are some very interesting (and valid) points as to why they are backing off her as much as possible but the good news is they are keeping an eye on Siena all the time.  She appears to be in very good hands  cheers

Thanks Doogs, and Safariman for the info, and links. I can understand your concerns Safariman, but from that last update from Doogs it looks as though they are being addressed, and I think it's good news DSWT are involved. The news does sound a bit more positive, so fingers x Siena will continue to improve without further intervention, and the Cubs will have a chance to survive

As you say Lai it's still huge, but at least from what you can see on the photo it looks as though it has healed, and there is no infection. Keep going girl

An Update on Siena's Wound - Some Good News and Some Bad News . . . . .

Saturday was a busy day in the Mara - early in the morning Siena was spotted by a Governors’ guide with her wound (initially caused by a buffalo, and since stitched up) unfortunately re-opened. Judging by the cuts to her side as well as her back legs, it appears that this time round it may have been caused by a fight between her and another lioness…

The vets were called immediately, and very quickly a response unit had been assembled and was on its way. She was sedated and tended to with every necessary precaution in place, and the team worked quickly to get the job finished to the highest possible standard - cleaning the wound; shaving the hair around it to allow for stitching; further cleaning and sterilising; stitching very carefully so as to maximise strength but also minimise irritation; adding antiseptic, more steriliser, and a painkiller; and then finishing the process with a layer of grey ‘clay’ (a healing agent that many may recognise from when her wound was last treated). I was lucky enough to join the team and watch the whole process from start to finish, and it was great to see the situation being handled so professionally and efficiently - I have absolutely no doubt that she is in the very best of hands.

Many thanks go to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for reacting so quickly and effectively in putting together and sending out a team lead by Dr Limo of KWS (Kenya Wildlife Services) and his assistant Felix of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and also to Patrick Reynolds (Governors’ Il Moran Manager) and the many Governors’ driver-guides that play such an active roll in animal conservation in the Mara - without the fast identification, communication, and reaction of all involved, the situation would not look anything like as positive, given the circumstances, as it currently does.

So, in short, the obvious bad news is that Siena’s wound has opened back up, but the really good news is that it has been successfully cleaned and stitched, and should now be in a good place to heal up naturally and gradually over the course of the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more updates over the next few days and weeks.
