Thanks LW they certainly are lovely shots of the baby Elephants playing, they are so much fun to watch, especially when I see them on the cams. It is also great news that they are going to use those photos in the battle against poaching in Kenya

Playtime for baby Ele's Empty Baby Elephants exported to China

Post  Chris-AWD Thu Jan 08, 2015 2:51 pm

Talking about baby elephants – what is the opinion around here about the baby elephants that is to be exported from Zimbabwe to China. It has been news around here for a while now.

Zim argues that said they urgently need to reduce its elephant population. According to them they have an elephant-carrying capacity of 42 000, but currently have about 100 000 elephants. We know that too many elephants destroys trees and cuts food sources for other wildlife species but exporting elephants to China of all places. How will they end up?

The babies are taken away from their mothers and then exported to unfamiliar surroundings.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/zimbabwe-defends-its-decision-to-export-over-60-baby-elephants-abroad-despite-protests-9965330.html

What do you think?

Playtime for baby Ele's Empty Re: Playtime for baby Ele's

This could be a very simple answer Chris.........£26.000......theres your answer, it's purely for the money, £26.000 for each baby elephant.

The longer answer is, I stick by saying it's purely a monetary deal, it has nothing to do with conservation at all. If it was a pure conservation effort then elephants would be relocated in families. Although this would affect the dynamics of the herd it would be a kinder thing to do and a more responsible thing to do.

As we all know, it's only the males who eventually leave the herd but this isn't until they are more sexually active males. Females stay with their family and herd. To violently rip young babies, male and female away from their mothers and families is disgusting and does not speak of conservation it speaks volumes off money deals to line the pockets of the Zimbabweans.

Also if it was for conservation, no true conservation effort would send vulnerable animals to China.......for gods sake, don't they read the papers or know whats going on in the world with regards to China and it's abhorrent treatment of animals. These elephants as the article says will be abused and more than likely die before they even become teenagers in their own right...........or even killed for ivory.

4 baby eles already died in 2012 when sent to China and now they want 60 more to die........great conservation that is!!!!!!!!!

Yes they can destroy land and it affects other wildlife I understand that so relocate them in groups to other parks with solid conservation efforts that are short of elephants, don't end them to a certain death sentence in China.

Also it goes to show how conservation aware they really are in Zimbabwe when Anastacia Ndlovu called them "Jumbo's" for god sake they haven't been called that in real life since the days of Disney and Jumbo. Her statement doesn't lead you to believe this is a real conservation effort at all, it's incredibly demeaning of the elephants.

The babys need to stay with their mums and family. Destruction of land etc is never good for other wildlife or the survival of the elephants either but this is certainly not the way to go. The next thing we will be reading is how many died in transport and how many died of broken hearts from separation and then how many died from abuse and neglect.

I feel quite depressed over the situation and my heart is genuinely aching for the elephants and I am saddened that I can do nothing about it. This is not a good move at all and I hate the way that people use the word/term conservation to try and fool everyone that that are doing a really nice thing for the elephants when all they are doing is sentencing them to death and the mothers and babys untold heartache.

That could have been littered with many swear words, i'm so sickened by that read and it's an article that's beyond conservation, it has nothing to do with it, its about greed on the part of the Zimbabweans and glee in Chinas part about getting it's hands on 60 gorgeous, majestic, loving, innocent baby elephants.

i'm fuming!!!!

Littlewid you are on spot on about this in your opinion. True conservationists would know that the basic stable social unit among African elephants is a group of closely related adult females with their young of various ages.

To ignore those intricate group dynamics reveal their true intentions.

I don't think this is the end of the story though - the US and European Union have signed petitions to block the sale of Zimbabwean baby elephants so hopefully something can still be done.

Sorry about taking your original intentions about the cute elephant playtime into something more depressive.

I totally agree with LW. This purely an exercise in gaining money, and has no connection with conservation what so ever. Ther are more than enough areas in Africa where these Elephants could be accommodated. that are short of Elephants. We know that many of these babies wont survive being ripped away from their Mothers we have witnessed the trauma, and anguish they go through when their Mothers are killed, and they have to be rescued by the likes of DSWT, Bless, and other NOGs. Even with the knowledge, and care they give them some of the still die of heartbreak, and yes that's a human emotion term, but I think its right to apply it to these animals. Its a complete recipe for disaster, and will only result in these animals going through suffering emotionally, and physically. Even if we could be sure they would be cared for properly which is extremely doubtful, it still the wrong thing to do, it would even be America, the EU getting involved it can be stopped before its to late. I wonder what would happen if there was a world wide call to boycott Zimbabwe as a Safari holiday destination in protest.
