Zimbabwean safari guides tried to save an elephant

Post  Laikipia on Wed Sep 09, 2015 3:50 pm

The desperate moments safari guides risked their lives to save young elephant stuck in the mud for four days… but after freeing him they were forced to put him down

Such a sad story but they did so try to save him. Amazing what some people will do to help wildlife.

I have just literally read this in the paper Lai and it truely is a very sad story and such a shame that after all their efforts and the elephants struggle to stay alive for four days that he had to be put to sleep. You can only admire his courage to stay alive and applaud his rescuers......just such a shame it wasn't a different outcome.

I Agree Littlewid. Nature is very harsh.

That really is so sad, after such a battle by both the Elephant, and the people to save it. The only good, and encouraging thing is people like this are willing to try to save our wildlife

On the other hand - we have the idiot guides

Now here is a scary sight.

Another elephant attacking a tour vehicle in Zimbabwe. Again it seems the driver of the vehicle appears to have recklessly followed the irritated animal may well be to blame.

Have a look at this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V79KGkjOTw

What irritates me is that the guide then sets out pointing his gun at the elephant as it then veers away from the vehicle.

OMG that really has made my blood boil. To start with the tourists in the vehicle seemed to find it funny that they were following the elephant who clearly didn't want to be followed. It was an extremely bad move on the guide to do that to the elephant....yes I'm sure on safari it's wonderful to see the animals but not when it puts them under stress like that. I'm not surprised the elephant flipped out, he was annoyed and protecting himself.......the tourists weren't laughing when the tables were turned and that irresponsible guide put everyones lives at risk. Also he caused a situation where he may have had to use his gun and then an innocent elephant would have been killed.

What on earth was he thinking?.........I dont think he was thinking at all, either about what he was doing, the elephants feelings or the consequences.

If he was a guide working for me I would sack him......he's a danger to the animals and the camps tourists.....disgusting!

The Man is an idiot Grrrr. I thought Guides had to be licensed, if he is it should be revoked, and the Camp/Lodge who employed him fined for putting guests in danger. They are there to observe, and see, not to harass, and encroach into their lives.
No the guests shouldn't have been laughing, but perhaps it was their first visit to Africa, and thought it was ok as the Guide was deliberately following the Elephant, and their laughter soon turned to screams of terror, but to their credit at the end they were telling the Guide not to shoot the Elephant
