Marsh Pride Updates Empty Marsh Pride Updates

Post  Anne-Marie1981 Mon Oct 03, 2011 3:38 pm

With a takeover being imminent, I thought we could post in here all snippets of info we find from different sources.

Two posts from Governors Camp Collection on Facebook:

The Wildebeest are back on Rhino Ridge, and there is plenty of life on the Mara River, which is still swollen from rains in the Mau Forest. Notch and his boys seem to be making advances into Marsh Pride territory. There may be some serious territorial disputes to resolve so watch this space....

A few days back, four young male lions moved into the marsh pride territory and started mating with White Eye and her sister. Today there was big fight which ended with Romeo being chased up to Rhino Ridge and leaving Clawed lying down with injuries near the musiara airstrip unable to move since morning, Maybe we will know his outcome by tomorrow. The other lions seem split because of the terror.

Further update and picture from Governors Camp Collection

(I have asked for confirmation on whether it is Romeo, because from their previous update I think its more likely to be Clawed.)

Romeo in trouble after his fight with the four younger males. He has been lying in this state for many hours so really he is not well.

Apparently it is Romeo: "This is Romeo who is also lying injured but is in better shape than Clawed."

Edit. They have now confirmed it is Clawed!

Thanks for the info AM. I'm getting more and more upset at these pictures and stories. Hate seeing Clawed and Romeo like this, it's not looking good for them Sad

I know it's nature and it's what happens in the lion world but we've followed these lions for so long, they do mean something to us all. They have been so brave defending their territory and their family against four strong males, they really don't stand a chance No Lying out all day in that hot sunny will not be good for them Crying or Very sad

Governors Camp Collection
Clawed is still alive but badly injured, he is lying at the culvert on way to airstrip. He was forced to move from the airstrip as the four new males are around the airstrip. This morning we watched the four new male lions chase and kill a male buffalo. One of the males was mating with white eye's sister when the buffalo came from far and started chasing the mating couple. Then later the buffalo started moving away not knowing he was moving towards other two male lions who were watching the incident. The buffalo ended up being chased and got by the neck until he was pulled down after a long struggle. There is no doubting the strength of the new males.

Poor poor Clawed, I feel relieved that hyena's didn't find him during the night, but so sad he's still suffering Sad

I Agree AM, I must confess to thinking and worrying about the Hyena's taking him as well, thank goodness they haven't.

The only and I mean only glimmer of light in all this is that the Marsh Pride will now be protected by four males instead of two which could make them a formidable force in the future.

I must confess to shedding quite a few tears yesterday for our two brave male lions Sad Crying or Very sad

Its just so sad isn't it? I know its nature and I am relieved that he is losing his battle this way, rather than what happened to poor old Red. Poor old boy. I wonder how Romeo, Joy and the cubs are getting on?

I shed a fair few tears too!! Especially after seeing them only a few weeks ago, and as battered as they looked, they looked well!!

Part of me wishes they had just run away from the 4 males and left them to it then they would still be alive and well today - but instead they were just so brave trying to stop these males taking their home, their pride and their babies Crying or Very sad Sad

Sad it's all happened recently I guess? We saw Clawed only last week, sleeping peacefully with Romeo nowhere in sight. I hate these battles and takeovers. It's all chaotic there at the moment with Notch's boys I believe?

I know, it is so sad and all confusing, the only thing we heard while we were there was that Notch and his boys were busy mating with so many different females, going around all the prides endlessly. We certainly saw Notch one afternoon after he had spent a morning mating, he was completely exhausted and flat out! We also saw 3 or 4 of his sons. So many lions around it was confusing, but presumably these new boys have come in from a neighbouring area and are taking over?

I have everything crossed that Clawed will be okay, we got up so close and personal to him we had to back away so I could take a photo and he could relax, I think our driver was getting a bit carried away and I didnt fancy Clawed sitting on my knee affraid

Shocked Shocked Now that would have been a story to tell!

Notch and his boys are going to have to start behaving. They are taking over all these prides but leaving them vunerable to further takeovers because they aren't staying with them. I do wonder if the two lions we saw mating were Notch's boys. I don't think our drivers knowledge was that great.

Further update from Governors Sad
Governors Camp Collection
Latest Update from Marsh pride: Clawed has moved from the culvert but has now not been seen all day. Romeo was seen today running off towards Paradise Plains and has not been seen since. The two females who had the 2 month old cubs have been located but it seems that only one is still lactating, which does not fare well for the others cubs but we have not been able to verify what has happened to them yet. Bibi is with the 4 new males and is mating intermittently with one of the males.

Everything really does seem up in the air at the moment. I remember Aatish saying he had seen Notch's Boys mating with some females of another Pride, who's Males had gone off to mate with females of another Pride. I suppose it will all settle down eventualy. And there was me thinking you would love a nice big Pussy Cat sitting on your Lap Lai Marsh Pride Updates 40683 If Claweds gone to ground I hope's OK

Im struggling keeping up with the goings on in the Mara between pride takeovers etc. It all seems a bit of a mess I just hope all survive and the cubs are OK and the males that have been ousted are recovering from their battles.

Thanks for the Governors update Anne-Marie. Let's hope it all settles down soon and that Clawed is okay and that Notch and his boys start behaving and whoever the 4 males are who are creating chaos calm down.

Marsh Pride Updates Empty Re: Marsh Pride Updates

Post  Anne-Marie1981 Fri Oct 07, 2011 5:14 pm

Thursday
Marsh Pride Update: Romeo has been seen towards the southern side of rhino ridge. He seems healthy enough but it still by himself. Joy and her four cubs were seen also on rhino ridge but a bit further north of Romeo.
Claude still hasn’t been seen. One of the guides who saw him after he’d been beaten says that he saw blood coming from a bad injury to his back. He was limping, protecting his back left leg. There were also twelve lions from the Marsh Pride seen even further north on rhino ridge. These were four sub-adult males and a mixture of adult and sub-adult females. They were doing as lions often do – lying down flat! They were in fine shape.
The four new males with the single female are still at Bila Shaka itself. One of them is still mating with her. It seems as if she is the token pacifier keeping the four males from the rest of the pride.

Friday:
The lions are Joy with her 5 cubs close to Bila Shaka but a fair distance
from the 4 new males. Clawed has been found at Governors Camp close to Jonathan's Scotts house! He still seems to be in a pretty bad way (hasn't eaten by all signs) and is over there probably to hide away from the four new males. There haven't been any changes in the status of the other lions. The last time White Eye was seen was on the arrival of the four males.

Thanks for those updates AM. It really does seem such a mix up, at the moment. I did'nt think Clawed would have survived this long with his injuries, he's really done well, but by the sounds of it, he's not going to be able to hunt, and we know the pride were getting his food before. So thats going to be a big problem for him, and such a shame. At least Joy, and the Cubs seem to be safe so far, and I hope White Eye's OK

Post  littlewid Sun Oct 09, 2011 3:50 pm

I've only just been able to catch up with this post, I knew it was going to be upsetting news. Romeo and Clawed were so brave staying to try and save their family and territory but I wished the two old pals had just fled but it's their nature to stay and defend and they obviously did that valiantly and to Claweds cost.
Joy is obviously doing a grand job of keeping the cubs safe which is such a relief and maybe as they say the single female is keeping one of the 4 lions busy as a peacemaker to save the cubs from being hunted out.

Take overs are such a sad happening no matter whether it's nature or not, it's always the cubs and the older males that really suffer.
I hope that Clawed and Romeo find each other again and maybe their chances of surviving will be better if they are together as it seems as though Clawed needs a friend at the moment.

A very sad and tearful read about the pride we have come to love and two males whom we have all had so much respect and love for. I hope the future news is good for both of them.

I watched a programe on Sky the other night, it was called Lion Wars, and was aout Pride takeovers. They said that after a takeover it is very rare that the Lioness's conceive in their first estrus after the takeover, because they wait to see if the new males are going to stay around, and are going to keep the Pride Safe.

Thats an interesting fact WS but also makes a lot of sense as the pride and cubs need protection but also it's amazing how nature can be controlled like that, animals are complex creatures that continue to astound us. I just wish this take over hadn't happened so violently for Romeo and especially Clawed.
