A friend has told us today. That she head a Cuckoo 2 1/2 weeks ago at Machynlleth in the Dyfi Valley Powys at the intersection of the A487 and the A489 roads. They have heard one for over 10Yrs apart from the last two, but one has returned this year

A few reports of Cuckoos, got my first male for two years up in the hills, seemingly we have a few that target meadow pipits round here.
Numbers are confined though and some areas have none, which is a shame.I know they are parasites, but it is a natural thing and no one seems to know why the drop in numbers.

It is a shame despite their behaviour, cuckoos are a bird that used to be so abundant around us and now they aren't. The one Pete heard has gone, obviously no one to mate with.

Pleased you've got a male near you TB.

I regularly hear a cuckoo at Stanwick Lakes in Northamptonshire. I first heard it this year about 3 weeks ago.

The ones near water often paritisise(spelling?) reed warblers, never ceases to amaze me that a bird smaller than a Sparrow doesn't notice and raises a bird about the size of a Dove.

I agree TB - the poor parents end up raising this huge fat chick that is more than four times their size! Nature is amazing.

I had forgotten about the chipped cuckoos - wonderful they are making it all the way there, but as you say WS, will they make it back next year?

This years youngsters are just making their way south, keep your eyes peeled for a bird that looks a bit like a bird of prey but flies like wimp. How they get all the way to Africa must be one of natures true wonders.

I agree TB, migratory Birds, Salmon, Trout, and other Animals have been doing these journeys for thousands of years, and how long has it taken us to invent the Sat Nav. As you say amazing

I do hope they can sort out the problems so this iconic bird still heralds spring for us all.
