Re: Anne's agony: Battered, kicked and stabbed

That certainly was not very nice to wake up to WS, but then my waking up to view that was nowhere like the wake up Anne has to face and then continued during the day.
It is incredibly upsetting to watch as well as read her plight, but I do believe it's watching it as well as reading about Anne that will spur people on to support ADI in helping Anne.

One question I have is, her owner says he visits her every hour but cannot be there there 24hrs a day, well, ADI filmed Anne over a three week period and not once did he appear in the secret filming, and as the cam was running continuously I find it very odd he isn't on the film, so that blows his story out of the water.

I also find it amazing that PM's can have so much control over our lives, in respect of how we live and what we can and can't do, that it is beyond belief that they have no real impact on how animals should be treated; I fear that Annes life will continue much the same as it is now. If the Keeper (and thats a farce to call him a keeper)is sacked, he will only be replaced by another cheap worker who probably has no respect for animals. Annes plight was the highlight of this story but we mustn't forget the other animals that were also suffering at the hands of the so called keepers.

ADI definiately need supporting and I imagine it is through funds and also lobying our local MP's for a change in circus law. I will check their link at the end of the film and see how we can help. Sadly I feel it may be the same as we have found before, in that circuses will have the right to control their own inspections and housing of animals and their welfare with the very limited once a year check from the RSCPA. This was the main thought from a questionnaire that was put out last year that a lot of us took the time to answer after another sad elephant story.

However, we do need to support Anne and ADI, otherwise nothing will change. Yes Anne has lived in the circus for practically all her life (she was born wild)but that doesn't mean she is happy there. Her owner says a flight to the USA would kill her but dying on a flight to a better life is surely better than dying whilst enduring a life of agony and abuse.

Anne should never have ended up in a circus, torn from her mother and the wild and the family that would have truely loved her. I hope there is a good outcome for Anne but I fear she will remain in the circus and all that will change is she will have a new keeper but more than likley of the same mentality.
However, like many others, I will do my damndest to help Anne.

Sorry for going on in a muddled fashion but I am so upset and fuming.

OK guy's this is the link you need. It does give Annes story again and more but also ways in which we can help.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention WS, lets see if we can all try to help make a difference for Anne and the other circus animals.

I was soooo sickened when I read this.

Bobby Roberts says she is a family pet, but come on at the very least you do not treat your pets like that or not supervise those looking after them for you. More importantly - EXOTIC ANIMALS ARE NOT PETS!

The Bobby Roberts Super Circus MUST be boycotted at all costs!!

I have read the article but confess I cannot watch the clip - the whole thing has made me feel quite sick and shocked. I can only agree with what has already been said by SM, Littlewid and WS. It's not often I am speechless but this really has got to me.

Mrs S ,and I are still feeling sick after watching, and reading about Anne. How any MP can not vote to stop this kind of thing happening is beyond me.
I have found a list of this years sites the Circus is appearing at, I'm not sure whether to put it on or not. If its on I was hoping it would stop people going, but there again it might be advertising it

I think you should let people know WS although I confess I have not been to a circus since I was a child I have always been so against them.

On my list of things to do today is a letter to our MP - so if the circus is coming to the Macclesfield area WS please let me know, I know one has visited in the past but couldn't say which/what one.

That article has made me cry all over again, but finally there is hope for Anne. I wonder how quickly they can actually get her away from the circus, even if it is only to Longleat while she is assessed by the vets until she can get to Whipsnade. At least then she won't suffer the daily abuse. I hope they can act fast, thank god for caring people who take a stance and get these atrocities into the public eye.

I read this in the paper at work today and have been praying ever since that Anne is removed from these evil people.
What made me laugh (in disbelief) was that the Roberts said they would be happy for her to go to a sanctuary if she was looked after properly......what a joke that is, how they had the nerve to say that I really don't know, why do they think people are fighting on Annes behalf to get her rehomed

I am sure that Anne will be free from these people, too many organisations are now seriously involved for it not to happen and if she is not well enough to go to America she will be free, whether it's at Longleat or Whipsnade, I am sure Anne will not end her days with these vile people.

One nice thing, was at work, many others were talking about Anne and supporting her cause, they were a group of people that I didn't know had such a passion for animals and in particular Elephants. It was so good to hear others speaking so passionately.

Update from ADI - 30th March

http://www.ad-international.org/animals_in_entertainment/go.php?id=2082

and from the Born Free Foundation

Wife of circus owner tells the BBC that Anne will be rehomed, as UK safari park offer a home. Moira Roberts, the wife of Bobby Roberts confirmed in an interview released yesterday that Anne would be rehomed. Meanwhile, Longleat Safari Park have offered Anne a temporary home.

The Born Free Foundation can confirm that we are involved in ongoing discussions with groups including the RSPCA and Longleat to ensure that she is offered the most appropriate and humane care in her retirement. Anne’s age and health present a unique set of problems, and we are pushing for thorough independent veterinary and behavioural assessment of Anne before any permanent decision is made regarding her long-term future. Born Free remains opposed to the keeping of elephants in zoos, but we recognise that the offer from Longleat may represent a significant improvement to Anne’s quality of life.

We will keep you updated as plans progress.

Thanks for the updates Doogs, and Lai. Lets all keep our fingers X that Anne gets moved, and treated soon. Longleat is at least a big improvement on her present conditions, and at least she can be assesed, and her needs looked after. Plus she will have the company of her own kind. Its great that everybody has rallied round, but if parliment did the right thing there would be no need for these campaigns. That should have been done years ago, and would have saved Animals lke Anne alot of misery

Anne's story made the 7 o'clock Channel 4 news, so I am assuming it has made the other channels too, this can only be good news for all circus animals.

The circus is at Knutsford, some 25 mins away and I was tempted to go and join the protest. It seems Anne was not there, the reporter said she was in Northampton, but not why or anything useful. Lets hope people are boycotting the circus and that Anne will no longer have to perform.

Thats great news Lai, fantastic that people people turned up to protest at Knutsford. It looks like the protest is gowing with an article in the Leigh Journal where the Circus is due to appear next Wednesday

Mmmm that's good news on the part of her not performing at the moment, but sad that she is at the circus HQ. I was hoping that she would have been taken away for her assessment to Longleat.

I do understand that she can't just be rehomed there is much that needs properly organising and interesting that the Born Free Foundation don't think that Whipsnade is the right place for her. I would trust their knowledge more than any other organisation.

I just hope something happens quickly - i couldnt sleep last night for thinking about this poor old ele Sad

Update from the Born Free Foundation - 31st March

GOOD NEWS FOR ANNE

The plight of Anne the elephant has captured the heart of the public. We are delighted to announce that Mr. Roberts has agreed that Anne can be rehomed to a place that she will feel safe and secure.

Animal protection groups and Mr. Roberts have agreed that Anne will be handed over to Longleat Safari Park as an immediate place of safety, where her condition can be assessed and she will receive veterinary attention. Longleat has facilities to house Anne and provide her with a secure environment with the best possible veterinary care.

At a meeting today, Animal Defenders International (ADI), British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), Born Free Foundation, Longleat, RSPCA and Specialist Wildlife Services discussed the best options for this elderly elephant who has endured so much.

It was agreed that steps should be taken to move Anne as soon as possible, with the priority being Anne’s welfare, safety and freedom from stress. Therefore the move will be carried out away from the public view.
