Osprey Diary Wed 22nd May
Posted on May 22, 2013 by rangeremma
Today is a day that summarises all that Osprey have to cope with in the UK- good and bad.
Firstly, at the Loch of the Lowes nest, our birds have incubated with dedication through a hot still morning and then an afternoon of hail and sleet showers( yes sleet falling on spring blossom!) There have been two fish deliveries to the nest and all seems well- we are now all on vigilant watch for any tiny signs of the eggs hatching.

Re: SHES BACK!!!!!! The Lady Returns
Thank you for the update WS, I am still pretty slack on checking the cams......too much work and sleep going on in my house at the moment
They do have to go through so much to incubate their eggs and raise the chicks (when they hatch). it's strange how humans moan sometimes about carrying a child and things that happen but at least we are not sitting out in rain and hail etc to keep them safe till they arrive, animals are much hardier than we are for sure.

Thanks for the clips and updates WS. It certainly looks windy on that nest, but very cosy and it's great to know we will have more chicks soon.

Osprey Dairy Tuesday 28th May

The wait for hatching goes on……. Yes we are all biting our nails here too. Yes we are concerned the eggs may have failed after they were left exposed during incubation for more than an hour. No we haven’t given up hope , or anywhere near it yet- there is still plenty of time yet as eggs 2-4 are not even ‘due’ yet.
Still windy you can hear it now 35sec Video
Keep your fingers X for the eggs

News: Osprey chick hatches at Loch of the Lowes
3rd June 2013
The Scottish Wildlife Trust is pleased to announce the hatching of an osprey chick, which could become the 50th chick to fledge from the bird affectionately known by many as ‘Lady’. The event has been celebrated by our volunteers, members and webcam followers around the world.
At about 8.45am on Saturday 1 June, Wildlife Interpretation Officer Val Gall spotted the first signs in one of the eggs. This tiny hole and subsequent crack progressed remarkable quickly to a full hatching. The top came off the egg and by about 10am the chick was free of its egg shell.
The male brought in a fish around 11.30am and the chick had its first meal of tiny amounts of shredded fish that afternoon, served with tender care by the female. The female has stashed some fish, tucking it under her whilst incubating, to ensure there is plenty available to give the chick ‘little and often’ meals.
The chick looks strong and healthy, with its instinct to reach up for food just as it should. It is absolutely normal for newly hatched chicks to find it difficult to lift their heads up as they have weak neck muscles and poor balance - not surprising after the mammoth effort of emerging from the egg shell.
The Scottish Wildlife Trust hopes it might be joined in time by another sibling.

Only one egg hatched, the chick is now 10 days old, and seems to be doing well, although Dad does'nt seem to have much idea about brooding yet.
The Lady just flew off the nest giving me a quick view of the little one
Video 34secs
Then the Lady came back in to Brood

Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Dairy Update Tues 9th July posted by Rangeremma
The heat today at Loch of the Lowes has been causing a few problems for wildlife, technology and sunburnt staff and volunteers alike!Though the sunshine is glorious, the temperature here is in the high 20’s ( by some reports locally 29degrees) making it one of the hottest places in the UK today. 0ur camera equipment is definitely struggling in the heat, as Lindsey explained, so we will continue to stream the slightly different view of the nest tonight which seems to be coping better with the heat, our female has spent virtually the whole day shading her chick from the sun- positioning herself so that her shadow falls on the chick, and making herself as wide as possible to maximize the shade she can provide. She hasn’t spent much time at all off the nest today, aware that here protection is vital for her offspring. The male has brought in two fish, which means the chick is getting its hydration as well as food as it should. There has also been a persistent osprey intruder , who has gone past several times today, but this unringed and untagged bird hasn’t made an serious attempts to land on the nest- its seems to be just ‘dropping by’ occasionally.

Re: SHES BACK!!!!!! The Lady Returns
Another cam I have been missing WS. This weather is so tough on the wildlife isn't it and mum is doing a good job of protecting her chick but it must be hard for her to take the sun to keep the chick in the shade as I am sure she would love to be in the shade herself. Dad sounds as if he is also doing a grand job bringing in the food for them. Lets hope the weather cools down a shade for all our wildlife.

THE LADY OF THE LOCH RETURNS ONCE MORE
News: Famous osprey marks 50th Anniversary with 70th egg
16th April 2014
The Trust is happy to announce the resident female osprey at the Loch of the Lowes laid her 70th egg in the early hours of this morning.
The 70th egg laid by the osprey, affectionately known by many as ‘Lady’, comes as the Trust celebrates its 50th Anniversary today.
The bird, which successfully fledged her 50th chick last year, could be the UK’s oldest breeding osprey and is thought to be around 28 years of age.

What an amazing Osprey she is WS, that's really brilliant news and the 20th May is not far away for the egg to hatch which is really exciting.
I have just looked in on the cam and it's really windy there and Lady is sitting on the nest keeping her egg nice and warm

Re: SHES BACK!!!!!! The Lady Returns
Loch of the Lowes Blog Update
We are now at the point where we can start to expect signs of hatching. Staff and volunteers at the visitor centre are all eagerly awaiting and watching for any signs of hatching at the nest. We would expect the behaviour of the Ospreys to change when the hatchlings are preparing to break out of the egg. Keep your eyes peeled for the following behaviours.
◾The eggs being turned more often by the parents during incubation
◾The female bird head tilting and listening to the chicks inside the eggs calling
◾The eggs themselves moving independently- not touched by the parents
◾The appearance of tiny holes or cracks in the eggs as they start to hatch.
Unfortunately as you may have noticed, our male Osprey has been leaving the eggs unattended rather a lot lately. Last night around 16:48, our male decided to leave the nest. Interestingly both Ospreys were observed from the hide, soaring and hovering within sight of the nest. Eventually the female did go back to incubate but we have no idea why they were both so relaxed about leaving the eggs exposed. Today the Ospreys have continued to incubate and our male has been dutifully delivering fish and taking his turn at incubating. Although he has left the nest unattended 3 or 4 times with the longest stretch approximately 26 minutes.
All we can do now is cross our fingers and hope that we have a chick hatch in the next few days.
Keep watching the webcam, you might be lucky enough to see it all happen.
