Nest building not instinct
This is a great study that shows that birds have to learn how to build nests and its not instinctual

Fascinating read PPH and I must admit I did always think it was 'inbuilt' that they knew what to do.
Been lucky to see Weaver Birds in Africa, they are very pretty little things and you could watch them for hours when they are nest building

Great read PPH thanks. I did'nt realise that either. The Weaver birds are brilliant to watch when they are nest building.

Re: Nest building not instinct
Weaver birds are lovely birds and the nests they build are amazing. I just wonder that if they had studied a bird that built only one kind of nest, it may have been more instinctual. I wonder if it's that the weaver birds nests are so complex that it is a building of skill that stops them dropping leaves, if their nests were more simple would it be more built in and is that the case for our little garden birds or are they all the same?........just a thought.
