This is the time of year to find fledglings out and about, thus it's usually easier to find them.
I was salmon fishing yesterday on the river Tummel in Perthshire, close to the nature resrve for the Tummel shingles.Just before nightfall the Sand Martins were busy feeding their young when two young Merlins tried their luck for supper.I was treated to a great flying display, but as the Sand Martins were experienced adults, the Merlins went to bed hungry.I was hoping to see Otters, wasn't expecting that.

Well i'm glad the Merlins went to bed hungry TB, it would have been awful if they had got the little Sand Martins. The little Fledglings have a tough time, I had two little fledglings in my garden the other day, posted the little saga and pics in the summer watch thread, thankfully all was well in the end. I'm sure it would have been great to see the Otters but at least you saw a magnificent flying display Very Happy

I bet that was great to watch TB, all predators have to learn the skills that will keep them alive so to watch them honing there technique must have been great. Where the Otters ones that had been released in Scotland that was on the news some time ago

TB that sounds idyllic.

I did see a Buzzard today on the way home, it surprises me just how many BoP there are here. Back home in Northern Ireland you hardly see any.

The top of Ireland is the place to see Gyr falcons in the winter, not very often, but they are seen, now that's a bird I would love to see in the wild.
