While I was out and about at lunchtime I heard what sounded like a cat making a high pitch growl and a 'hissing and spitting' sound they make when they are threatening another cat. I look around and couldn't see a cat but I found that the sound was coming from a squirrel. It was on a tree branch and its body was curled up as if it was ready to pounce, then I noticed another squirrel in another tree.

As I was watching it launched itself at the other squirrel and that one ran away, I've never seen or heard squirrels making this sound or doing this before, has anyone else???

I must say PPH I have never seen or heard that, i've never heard a squirrel make a noise and we have loads around at work. It sounds as if it was being territorial for some reason.

We have plenty of squirrels and they make all kinds of sounds when the dogs chase them up the trees, sort of hissing etc but I can't describe it as well as you PPH Very Happy

I've never heard that myself although we do have a few Suirrels around. So I checked on the Web and there are a number of posts about it. The consensus seems to be that it's a threat warning, they apparently make a sort of Chuc Chuc sound when around their own nest.

it was quite weird as like you've said I've never heard a squirrel make any kind of sound as they tend to be high in the trees or playing the 'if I stand still, maybe they won't see me' game as I call it

it definately sounded territorial and considering the actions I would definately agree.

Glad you like my new avatar WS, its pretty much what I feel like when I get up in the morning and look outside at the moment

We have squirrels in the park over our back fence and they come out with some strange sounds. The larger grey squirrel loves sitting in the tree just above the fence where Jet sits and winds Jet up!

I must admit I've never heard a Squirrel make a noise before either scratch

Found this on You Tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrV2HGwgLFk Does it sound familiar to any of you who have heard Squirrel's making a noise ?
