Spot the Birdie
As I was walking to work this morning I managed to spot a bird in the trees opposite where I work, I quickly took a picture with my phone, its not a very good one but from what I saw of its face (before it turned away from me when I took the picture) I think its a juvenile sparrow hawk.
I've drawn a ring around it as its really well camouflaged but the markings on its face looks almost identical to a picture I have of a juvenile sparrowhawk in my bird book
(you may have to use a zoom facility to see it a bit better)

I may have to leave that to WS or Lai or someone to zoom in on PPH, I can't work out how I do that at the moment but if it is a Juvenile Sparrow hawk, lucky you for seeing and and well done for spotting it

Hmmmm not sure PPH. I zoomed in, and tweaked it a bit
, but from what I can see it looks on the big size a bit, but it could be a female which are larger than the male. If it helps you this is the photo I took earlier in the year of a Male Sparrowhawk
Also this is a link that tells you about them, and the size

Re: Spot the Birdie
i know there isnt anything to provide scale for the size but its body was about inbetween a crow and magpie without its tail. Its breast was speckled like a sparrowhawk and looking at pictures I've found online the face I saw (i wish I couldve take a photo of it) has that 'dont mess with me' look
I was actually looking for a long tailed tit which I'd seen the day before which was injured and I heard a bunch of magpies making a god awful noise and I looked in the tree and there it was staring at me. Totally magical moment and it was staying very still, obviously the magpies didnt like it being there

That's about the right size PPH, its difficult to see from your pic, but from what you say, I would say your right Sparrowhawk. It does give you a fantastic feeling when you see something like that. I could'nt believe it when I saw mine

PS If you want to zoom a pic. Make a copy of the pic, save it, then open it in photo gallery, then with your curser on the copy pic push the wheel on your mouse forward, and it will zoom
