Came across this website recently. They have produced a series of e-bird and wildlife guides downloadable onto i-pads, android tablets, kindle fire, smart phones, i-pod touch etc. They include a RSPB UK e-bird guide as well as an e-guide to the Birds of East Africa (Stevenson, Fanshawe version) and several other bird and mammal guides to various areas of the world Although I have not yet downloaded any myself and therefore cannot comment on how well they work, they appear to be a lightweight way of being able to carry around (particularly on safari) a comprehensive guide without the weight of a normal and sometimes very heavy book. I have several guides which I keep at home but never take on safari as they are too heavy so I am tempted to try one of their e-bird guides on my next trip to Africa.

Thanks for the information Safariman. I've just had a quick look at the website. I've 3 that they mention the Sasol ebirds book which is great and the e.trees of Southern Africa, as you say handy instead of taking heavy books (although I love my bird book and always take that) and the RSPB book.
I'm going to check out the rest of the apps now.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for that Safariman, I have quite a few guides on wildlife for the UK in the Car, and at home, but I can really see the appeal of the different guides when going on Safari, or abroad, a great space saver. Just checked the site out, and I noticed that not all the guides are compatible with all the different platforms, ie Ipad, Android, ect, you need to check if the Guide you want is compatible with the device you are going to use. This is the website link for the information Safarimans mentioned, and it is a great space saving idea

Just had a quick look Safariman and it looks really good. I need to check it out more and see whats what so I will have a good look over the weekend. I love books but this sounds a nice and light way to have identification of wildlife with you.
