Poachers kill Monarch of New Forest: Famed stag drowns fleeing from hunters who wanted £1,000 antlers

Hunters wanted 16-year-old stag's huge antlers, which were worth £1,000

Deer - known locally as The Monarch - only wounded by shot to the head
Stag escaped to a lake in Burley Park where he later drowned

WS I read this on the internet the other day and it just made me cry so much, I forgot to post it. I was also so flaming angry. Such a waste of a majestic life and all for no reason, not that killing him and getting his antlers is a good reason for killing him, it should never have happened. What he must have gone through doesn't bear thinking about, such an horrific death for this beautiful stag.
Also this is a privately owned stag so what on earth were they doing trying to kill him and in this day and age for only £1000, that's peanuts compared to this wonderful creature.
I truly hope the police are able to find the killers of the Monarch and they have to pay the £5000 for killing him.
Are we going to get to a situation where stags are going to have their antlers removed to keep them alive? that is not possible as they need them for the Rutt and they are about their whole being.
It all just makes me so incredibly mad and so deeply upset for the Monarch, his life was worth more than how he died. It's made me cry again just thinking about him and he was so beautiful as well.

RIP Beautiful fellow, you didn't deserve to die that way
