This is so sad and poignant at the same time. I hope the little Joey remains well and that dad survives his grief.....so sad ive not seen pictures like it before. Sad

Sad Sad that's a sad story and I wonder what happened? Let's hope the Joey is okay and able to survive solo. Animals do grieve despite what some people think!

Oh dear this was not a good thing to see just now

Kangaroo in heartbreaking 'grieving' photos may actually have killed its mate

Photos of what seemed to be a heartbreaking death scene between marsupials touched the hearts of many. But experts suggest it may have been the aftermath of a kangaroo killing

That is so sad I prefer the first scenario, although the second is more likely

Its difficult to say isnt it. I know they are the experts and as we know animal mating and the rights to mate can be quite fierce but this male looks to be very gentle with her and if there had been an agressive attempt to mate, do you think the young Joey would have hung around and been so settled, he didn't look anxious at all. I know they are saying the male looked aroused but I think that animals can sometimes be in this state when they are under threat or feeling vulnerable or emotional.
Maybe we will never truely know but I too would like to think this was a grieving male who had lost his mate and he was trying to get her up, just like mother eles do to their dead calfs.

I think you're right Littlewid, we'll never actually know so it's an assumption. For me I prefer your link to mine Shocked
