Fat Ball Guzzlers
The picture was taken at 10.30am there was still 3 fat balls in the feeder from earlier this morning It's not that clear because it's taken through the Kitchen Window
The Video is an hour & half later if you look at the top of the screen you can see the Sparrows ligning up to take turns
Half an hour later it was all gone

That was brilliant WS, at first it seemed like an orderly queue but then I agree with Anne-Marie, there was definiately some queue jumping going on but what made me smile was the one eating from the coconut all by himself, no-one twigged he was alone and having a nice meal there, just magic, a really gorgeous video WS

Re: Fat Ball Guzzlers
I put fat balls out but they never seem to go but maybe the birds that visit me don't like them
The birds I get are mainly Chaffinches, Robins, Pigeons and Great Tits. On the other hand the mealworms, peanuts and seed mix are a huge hit

Re: Fat Ball Guzzlers
It makes me laugh when you buy bird food and it says robin food or blue tit food - our birds eat from all the different types we put out - whether it's nuts, seeds, fat balls, suet cakes, sunflower seeds etc. They don't seem to mind. Earlier this evening we had 5 jays come in - i know they arent everyones favourite but they are beautiful to look at. I wished i had had my camera to catch the whole family feeding.
I reckon your birds are enjoying those mealworms PPH -

Re: Fat Ball Guzzlers
Those Birds you have PPH are mainly seed eaters, but as Lai says they will sometimes eat anything, but proberbly because they have the choice they go for the seed. We get Sparrows, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Collerd Doves who the fat ball bits off the floor, Magpies, and Crows, and since last week a Greater Spotted Woodpecker, and has now been joined by another, but can I get a photo or Video no chance evrytime I bring the camera up it sees the movement even though I'm inside, and off it goes

Once they get used to you WS they'll stay around, our woodpeckers barely bother to move away when they see me now - look forward to seeing your photos when you can

Re: Fat Ball Guzzlers
I can't believe it!!!
I had a visit from a Sparrow yesterday afternoon. It was so quick so couldn't see if it was a House or a Tree Sparrow but it was definatly some kind of Sparrow.
Really happy as I haven't seen one on my feeder before

Forgot to say the mealworms go down a treat, especially with the robin as he/she takes a beak full away so it must have a family somewhere

Re: Fat Ball Guzzlers
I think the sparrow I had was a fledgling as it was a bit wobbly with flying.
I saw on the RSPB website that Sparrows are on the red list so I was really happy to see one and will try and make sure there is a lot more food so it gets fed

Brilliant idea PPH - sad when you think how common sparrows used to be and now they are on the red list.

Lovely picture WS, always makes me smile when you see them hanging upside down to feed. Loved the little video clip......you didn't nearly say a rude word at the end did you

Re: Fat Ball Guzzlers
Just listened to it again I said Ahhh gone, but I'm going to have to give the window cleaner a clip round the earn OUCH
PPH we have over 20 odd Sparrows they are a mixture of Tree, and House Sparrows. At the begining of the year we only saw a couple, and your right they are on the Red List. One Bird we havent got is a Robin we had one early in the year, but since the hard weather we've not seen one

Yes I like that one Mrs S got it yesterday. It's a young Male you can tell because it has a Red Crown, but it looks quite big if it's this years fledgeling. I'm not sure how old they are before they loose the Red on top

Re: Fat Ball Guzzlers
I've just posted our woodpecker visitor under Summer Watch. Do they lose the red WS? I thought males had a red head and females didn't I think i need to go and look in my book .................

Re: Fat Ball Guzzlers
I checked in my book Lai, and this is what it said " The male has a distinctive red patch on the back of the head and young birds have a red crown." So I'm assuming it's a young male

How annoying is that PPH, people often ruin things for the wildlife and the lovers of it too. Hopefully your little sparrow will be back soon
