Hi PPH
Looks like a Lesser spotted to me. Greater spotted has an extensive amount of red on it's belly and the lesser spotted has none.
Nice to see PPH's friend.

Re: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker??
It's hard to tell for certain PPH from the Video, but as Lai says there does'nt look as though there is any red on its belly towards the start of the tail which indicates the lesser spotted woodpecker. Although having looked at it in full screen on You Tube a few times the moustache and beak look more like the greater woodpecker. The two usual identification marks are as we said the red belly, and the other is that the Lesser Spotted's wings have white bars all the way up the wing. Where'as the Greater Spotted's wings have a white badge from the shoulder 3/4s of the way down the wing.
Here's a couple of pics which might help your friend to compare them with the bird on the video
The Lesser Spotted is about 6" long 14.5 cm
The Greater Spotted is about 9" long 23 cm
If I had to guess from the video I would say it's a Lesser Woodpecker as I cant see any red under the belly, but once a bird finds a feeding station it normaly returns so if your friend keeps an eye out, and checks the wing markings as well as the belly they should be able to get a certain identification
Hope this helps PPH

Re: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker??
Thanks for that PPH - what's so funny is that his underside is hidden behind the peanuts and that's the bit we need to see
I am still thinking Lesser Spotted at the moment but going to look back on your early posts now

Re: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker??
I reckon Woody is after remaining a mystery however I think he showed just enough of his belly to reveal he is a Lesser, thats my guess anyway, could be wrong but Woody is going to have to prove that and reveal himself
Nice video PPH, thanks for posting him.

I whish we could get our Woopecker on Video for that long PPH it's much shyer than your friends. I'm leaning towards Lesser, but I dont think it's conclusive yet. Thanks for posting the video

Finaly got a Video of our Greater Spotted Woodpecker it's not brilliant but you can see what one looks like
We know there are 2 of them, this one does'nt have the Red Crown that you could see in Mrs S's photos a while ago, it may be that it has matured or it could be a different one.

Just brilliant WS, he is beautiful and he was having a right old feast wasn't he. I'm really pleased you managed to capture him for us to see I wonder if him and the other one will ever come and eat at the same time?

Re: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker??
Really nice footage WS. We have a green woodpecker in the park behind our house and once landed on our back lawn. I wish I could get a picture, but they are only fleeting glimpses.

Re: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker??
PPH i've posted under WAA Autumnwatch thread some photos of a Greater Spotted Woodpecker, they are the commonest of the pied woodpeckers so if your friend has the Lesser Spotted she is very lucky
