Rare eagle back in the air thanks to rescue effort

Bird found starved and soaking after flying 100 miles from release site
HAPPY ENDING: The sea eagle rescued and released by the Scottish SPCA now carries a radio tag so experts can keep track of her
More Pictures
A RARE sea eagle found starving and soaked through in the west Highlands has had a new lease of life thanks to bird-lovers.
The Scottish SPCA successfully rescued, rehabilitated and released the giant bird found struggling to survive on the Ardnamurchan peninsula.
This is the first time the charity has successfully returned an eagle to the wild.
The female white-tailed sea eagle was one of 19 youngsters released in Fife a few weeks earlier as part of the East Scotland Sea Eagle reintroduction programme by RSPB Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage, which has been running since 2007.
Named Yellow 3 by her identification tag, she was rescued from Ardnamurchan by the charity’s Oban-based senior inspector, John McAvoy, in September.
After being spotted by a local dog-walker, Mr McAvoy found the bird with her feathers saturated from the extreme weather and unable to fly. She was also lean and in desperate need of feeding.
He fed and cared for the bird overnight before taking her to the Scottish SPCA’s Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fife.
Centre manager Colin Seddon said: “Thankfully she had no physical injuries. She was simply naive and got caught up in bad weather so all she needed was resting and feeding up. After recuperating in our care, we released her last Thursday at a secret location.
“Food will be left out for her at the release sight to support her until she is fully independent.
“The whole operation was a team effort involving inspector McAvoy, RSPB Scotland and the staff here at our wildlife centre and we’re all delighted to have been able to help this stunning bird, which has suffered much persecution over the years despite its protected status.”
RSPB Scotland east Scotland sea eagle project officer Claire Smith added: “We are grateful to the Scottish SPCA for helping to rehabilitate this young eagle, at the early stages of a reintroduction every bird counts. Our young released eagles all behave differently each year and, whilst the majority of birds are in Fife and Perthshire, this young female flew more than 100 miles in a couple of days so it’s no wonder she was tired.
“Since her release we’ve been monitoring her by radio tag and checking on her daily. She’s in really good condition and flying well.”
Anyone wishing to report an injured or distressed animal should call the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999999.

Just an update, one of the autumn released Sea Eagles has been seen at the RSPB reserve at Kinnordy near Kirriemuir.Worryingly it doesn't seem to have any fear of people sitting in a tree at the side of the road, hope it does well.

That sounds a bit worrying TB, it's always a concern when released Animals loose their fear of humans as it means they are so vunerable.
Thanks for the update

I take it you've seen that(think there is only one)film of them in a jungle somewhere in South America.Quitely watching a Sloth moving along a branch and WHAM it had gone, carried off by this huge Harpy.A bit red of claw stuff, but totally fascinating.

Yes thats the one I watched on TV. I think it was TT who alerted us to that programme he loves his Eagles to. It really was a great watch. They were trying to film the chick, and the mother kept coming in, and battering the camera man

Even though only a handfull will ever see a Harpy, the world would be a poorer place without these iconic animals, inluding Snow Leopards and Tigers as well.

Sadly thats true TB, and the list will grow, because not enough people in the right places care, and future generations will only be left to wonder what it was like to see these Animals in person in the wild.

Update on our Sea Eagle,it seems to have settled on Loch of Lintrathen.A drinking water reservoir that is stocked with trout for fishermen.Ospreys breed there and the RSPB have a hide there.Hopefully if it stays there it will be ok,with plent of folk keeping an eye on it,plus plenty of trout to eat.

That seems to be one of the safest places it could be TB. With lots of eyes keeping it safe fingers X it goes on to breed. Thanks for letting us know

Dont like the sound of that TB, its putting itself at risk there. Well not putting itself, but a risky area to be in

These two are youngsters not yet a year old, think it's about 5 years before they breed.

Re: Rare eagle back in the air thanks to rescue effort
Your spot on TB. Just checked it out, and found this from thr Forestry Commision
The white-tailed eagle - also known as the sea eagle or white-tailed sea eagle ... The young eagle will then spend about 5 years in non-breeding areas
www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/white-tailedeagle
Look as though my fingers are going to be X for along time, and then they wont breed in that area

Re: Rare eagle back in the air thanks to rescue effort
We now have a third White Tailed Sea Eagle in the area, seems they are dispersing more this year, possibly due to the large-ish numbers near the release site.
Also quite a few Goshawks being seen, now is the time to see them as they do their mating display flights.Once they start nesting they vanish, like true ghosts of the forests.
