Re: Bug challenge
Trust me to only come dangerously close
There is a Large Heath Butterfly and it's quite rare and they live in Scotland. Found this link on one.

If it's not a Large Heath I will keep looking but apart from the orange on it it is very similar.
If it is........well done WS

Re: Bug challenge
A Large Heath it is,there are three sub species and the scotica has no "eyes" on the underwing. They are all over Britain but not that common anymore. The Small Heath has a dark edge to the wings. They like marshy habitat as the caterpillars like cotton grass.

Re: Bug challenge
I really enjoyed that, as I've said I'm not well up in these things, but I'm learning, and the plus is your not only seeing the insect, or subject your looking for, but other species as well
thanks TB

Re: Bug challenge
I only got it from TB's clue that you were close. I would'nt have got it otherwise. You did the hard bit so we'll call it 75% yours, and 25% mine

Re: Bug challenge
Toadflax it is,I've never seen it in the wild before,I did grow some once when we lived in Leicestershire in the '80's from a packet of wild seeds.
Close with the butterfly, but not close enough.

Re: Bug challenge
Think you could be right with that LW. The Essex Skipper has glossy black tips to its Antenna. I went for the Small Skipper as it said it was slightly more orange. Still looking at bugs

Re: Bug challenge
The toadflax does have it's own weevil, I think called gymnetron but this doesn't look like one of those so I need to keep looking as this may be an interloper on this plant out to confuse us
