The butterfly is a Large Skipper(so the warden told me),I've never heard of an Essex Skipper!
I thought the beetle might be a Cardinal, but I'm unsure.

Why I think the bug may be a Soldier Beetle:

Lets compare:
Bug challenge - Page 3 Waa_be10
TB's Beetle

Bug challenge - Page 3 Waa_be11Bug challenge - Page 3 Waa_be12
Cardinal Beetle . . Soldier Beetle

The biggest identifier for me are the legs. TBs bug seems to have half black at the ends and half the same colour as the body. The cardinal beetle is all black. There is also a hint of dark at the rump on TBs were the cardinal is a solid colour and the Soldier as the dark rump to.

I could be completely wrong, but that is how I have come to the Soldier beetle conclusion.

The Cardinal has black legs and mine(?) has got reddish legs, looking like a soldier to me.Shame it's not more in focus, but I was aiming at the butterfly.

It does appear to be a Soldoer doesn't it. Although TB's looks like it's got a smaller head, then a bit of body and then an oblong bit with a dark rump. SM's Soldier seems to have a bigger head and then his body is all one piece but does have the dark rump. I think your right SM but they do look a little different.....if thats not too double dutch Very Happy

Plus the antenna are the same segmented fashion, were the cardinal looks serrated(?) and shorter.
