An evening by the river
Went fishing on my local river, sadly the salmon got off, though we are on a total catch and release untill June.
But what a lovely evening it was,Common Sandpiper nesting along with Grey and Pied Wagtails. An Osprey hunting overhead and so many Swifts,I can't remember seeing so many in one place for years.
Also the flowers along the river were amazing,no weed killers up here, the whole bank smelt of liquorice from.............(first part of your quiz)and the amount of riverside plants were quite staggering.
One of my favourite flowers the Yellow Flag Iris.
I'm sure you know who left these prints?,just not found the beastie yet.Back again tomorrow evening for another look.

We have up to 100 mph winds so staying at home with the lids battened down It's not Fennel but another old wild British herb, the name was often given to young girls.
You know what the foot prints are,I'm hoping they are from a youngster.

Wise decision I think TB. Winds picking up here too but nowhere near as bad as you up there.
Okay, so not Fennel not sure then.
Hoping you'll be okay and able to get out tomorrow.

TB I can only think of Fennel, Anise and Tarragon but it's probably none of those. Are the little footprints an otters?.......now tell me it's a two legged animal
Hope you survived the winds ok, 100mph is bad

My first thoughts were Otter aswell but they looked to small, plus only 4 toes that I can see and I think Otter have 5 toes
They look a bit like cat tracks or maybe a baby fox

I bet that was a really great evening TB, dont blame you with the wind we've had one gust at 76 MPH a few miles from us. Some good ideas there Guys, just wondering if it's a Scottish Wild Cat ?

The shadows slightly hide the detail, but there was clear evidence of a webbed foot,so thinking Otter rather than Mink, plus I'm told they are on this section of the river.Off to the river now as the wind has eased off a bit.

Okay TB - what about Sweet Cicely, it smells of aniseed and is from the same family as fennel and has fern like leaves.

Spot on,likes to live in damp places, often found near wild garlic, that can both be added to a salad, but not tried it.As you can see,it's starting to set seed,so I might try a bit next year.

Re: An evening by the river
okay I must look out for it, we have wild garlic by the river and I've not tried it in salad yet, but saw a cookery programme that said you could. There's so many things you can eat that you don't realise.
Looking forward to the next photos TB
