Re: Signs of Summer
Man here showing off with new camera...............
Not the best shot I know, but it was my first attempt, set the camera in "sport/fast moving thingy" follow a single bird through the finder focusing as often as you can and snap when it's close enough(this one nearly hit me).

Re: Signs of Summer
You show off all you like TB, thats a brilliant photo, I would love to catch a bird in flight.
I bet it was spectacular to see the Trout jumping for flies Lai. Love the pic of him.
A few weeks ago I tried taking some pics of my Bro-in-Laws Koi. I don't have a special camera or a filter so they are a bit sunny but heres a few of them. There are lots of Koi in a huge pool but I only managed about three of them.
Definiately need a better camera and to also not chop their heads off

Re: Signs of Summer
I think they look really artistic LW, difficult to shoot through water even with filters. Nice shot Lai, you've got to be really lucky to get one of the Trout coming up for the Fly. Thats not bad TB, I tried the same thing with mine trying to get a shot of Gulls on the coast, and focusing was the problem. I used the Fast/ Sports feature, and got nowhere at first, the I tried it with the multishot feature 3 shots one after the other, and got one that although not as sharp as I'd have liked, was'nt to bad. I think next time I try it, I'll go for a ten multishot, working on the theory, that at least one will be sharp

A Cannon EOS 550D,fancy bit of gear, for the first time in years I'm actually reading the manual,I know blokes don't read manuals(or ask for directions when we're lost ),but I think this is such a powerfull tool it would be a waste not to try and use some of it's capabilities.
With this one I should have used a tripod really, but with auto focus, but manual shutter speed control down to third of a second, you get the slightly smokey effect on the moving water.

TB, When I did my Photography City & Guilds our theme was movement and it is so hard to do without a tripod this is one of my exam pieces I had to do while panning at the same time:

Re: Signs of Summer
Great pics both. When I started out as an apprentice photographer at Rolls Royce Crewe. I would never have thought that we would have the tools, and what they are capable of today. I used to take photographs of massive engines. on plate glass negatives, the speed of the negative had to be really slow, so that when taking the photo you could walk back, and forth infront of the camera with a lamp, and paint the engine in light to get rid of all shadows. It used to take anything upto 20 mins or more to do, and I thought that was clever

Re: Signs of Summer
Just catching up here. No I didn't TB. I was just walking round the woods so wasn't prepared for fish!
Great photo tweaking WS.
I'm just about to read my manual again and also another book I bought for my Canon camera - i've forgotten so much and it seems such a waste as TB says. Need to practice each day

Re: Signs of Summer
I tried the Multi/ High speed shot on mine today on this years Herring Gull young. Had to zoom a bit then crop the pic, so its not as good as it would be with interchangable lenses like TB's got. Thats what you get with a really good camera, quality.
There's another option I did'nt get chance to try, thats Muli Shot/ High resolution. Have to have ago at that next. As TB says it's worth reading the instructions, then playing around with the Camera in different modes, at least you dont have to have, a film developed, and waste money to see the results

WS they are brilliant, it's a really clear picture. Playing around with the camera and reading the manual is paying off. Maybe if I read my manual I would get better pics too

Re: Signs of Summer
You're getting far too good with that camera WS - but great that you are
It's Ian's birthday on 29/08 (we leave for our holiday 03/09) so I have arranged for a professional photographer to come up from Edinburgh (nothing local available) and spend a day with him & his camera. I know Ian knows a fair bit about photography but I think he needs some help with the likes of moving animals, especially leopards & cheetah as if it's not done properly their spots go all blurred ! I know we can't replicate the same scenario up in Aberdeen but any moving animals would help. I think he'd also benefit from the guy going into detail about the settings on his camera and when/how to use them all. Hopefully he'll like that and it will allow him to take better pictures while we are on safari

Re: Signs of Summer
That's a really good idea Doogs. I did the same for Ali and I before we went last year, a local man who was more into wedding photography but was able to help with quite a lot, as you say camera settings etc.
We've decided when she comes to stay in August to go to Chester zoo and practice with some of the animals there.

Good idea Lai - lots of practice there
WS - that's such a great picture, Dalmations are soooo cute One of my all time favourite Disney Films was 101 Dalmations - the proper one, not the cartoon version
