I used to fish all night on the Norfolk Broads in the 1970's and often heard these birds,it really is the most amazing noise to come out of a bird.Very secretive but they can be seen in the Autumn as they do migrate around the country,some coming over from Europe.Keep an eye out when visiting reed fringed lakes(or should that be an ear out!)

That really is brilliant news TB, sad to say I've never heard one. But you never know the way they are increasing in numbers. It's a great success story that the Bittern has increased so well, as they say after the last two hard Winters we've had.

Thanks for the link TB. I've never seen them or heard them, just been on the RSPB site to see what they sound like, definitely not a bird song/sound I've ever heard before, but easily recognisable if we should be so lucky.
