A Question
Just a quick question, does anyone know why we have had an invasion of Crane flies this year? It hasnt been terribly wet, it has been quite sunny and fairly dry apart from the odd day but we have masses of them.

Re: A Question
From the Cambridge News July
HEATWAVE: A plague of daddy long legs - just why are there so many of them?

Crane fly or daddy-long-legsIf you’ve been battling an invasion of daddy-long-legs, you’re not alone.
Millions of the spindly-limbed insects - proper name crane flies - have emerged in huge numbers as the hot weather continues.
Prof Malcolm Burrows, a Cambridge University expert on insect behaviour, said the gangly creatures normally start hatching out about this time of year.
He said: “They come out in late June to early July, but it may be that they’re a bit late because of the weather, and there certainly are a lot of them about.

Re: A Question
Thanks for that WS.Maybe it is because it has been so hot and it is still warm that we have so many. There does seem to be hundreds of them around at the momemt. I keep capturing them in my spider catcher and releasing them, I wouldnt want to kill them but they are a darn pain when you open your doors or windows and in they fly.
It does still seem rather late for them so may be I will ask the question on the Autumnwatch web site, it would just be nice to hear what they have to say.

Re: A Question
Thats what I thought LW, a bit lae, it was the only thing that came up when I googled it. So a good idea to try to get a question on Autumnwatch. Strangely we are not having a problem here in North Wales, in fact I have'nt seen any, there proberbly around, but I have'nt noticed them
