I think Professor Wu is quite amazing. I am not hugely knowledgeable on Amphibians or Reptiles but they do fascinate me. He is not Bonny as Doogs says but in his own way he is a huge handsome chap. I didn't know they were that endangered so good on ZSL, the Edge project and China. What a shame that everything has to be eaten by some people. I am sure Professor Wu will certainly do his bit to raise awareness of the Giant Salamander.
Thanks for the post SC. Doogs and I went to ZSL London last summer but we didn't make it into the Amphibian/Reptile house

I too am glad that ZSL will collaborate with Chinese institutions on saving this endangered species used to coexist with dinosaurs. Yeah, they don't look as cute as pandas who received a lot of attention. They deserve to be saved because they are so endangered and so ancient. They are extremely rare in the wild now, the majority are farm-raised. The wild ones are usually caught for food or put into salamander farms that raise the animals for food. Sadly, again human in this case is the biggest threat to the endangered animals. Wishing the conservation program for this ancient species will work just like that for giant pandas. Chinese media is helping with the conservation effort as well which is good: http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/asia-pacific/china-police-suspended-after-dining-on-giant-salamander-1.2081356
