Not sure what set the elephant of on this rant - I am sure we'll get some analysis later.

We had a TV program on Sunday night about a game farm here that was planning something called a "driven hunt"

I have never seen or heard of this before but apparently it involves foreign hunters stand on purpose-built platforms to shoot animals driven into their path.

The program repeatedly indicated that this type of hunting is a familiar tradition in Europe.

Here is an update about it.http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/18-animals-already-killed-in-platform-hunt-NSPCA-20150908

Are any of you guys familiar with this type of hunting?

Chris I am sure if I remember correctly without researching it more at the moment. That this type of hunting was used in Africa, and India many years ago at the time of europeon dominance of Africa, and India. They used beaters to drive game as well as Lions, tigers, and other predators towards the waiting guns, who would usually be sat on Elephants. It is still used in the UK for Game Bird shoots on dedicated Estates that breed different types of game birds that people pay to shoot. The birds are driven up, and towards individual stands which house each of the shooters in a line.
This is NSPCA's FB Page link https://www.facebook.com/NSPCA
Interestingly I found this site when I Googled Hunting with beaters in Africa, its in the Limpopo area.

Although I've never been on Safari I think anyone who knows anything about Elephants that you should never get to close to an Elephant in musth Lai

Ps Just Googled Driven Hunting Africa, and there are a few sites advertising it Chris

This driven hunting is making the headlines here at the moment, my mother who is not online at all mentioned it this morning, something she had read in the Daily Telegraph. It sounds appalling and I am quite shocked that anyone would take part.

I seem to remember someone posted something on FB. I will have to have a look.

Hi Lai and WS,

This issue is making our headlines today with the social media machinery getting momentum in an attempt to stop it.

They report here that it still is a popular form of hunting in Europe today.

I would like to see what our professional hunter association says about this because they always going on about the ethics of hunting which basically involves giving an animal a fair chase opportunity.

But how fair could it be when the animals are chased down a cleared stretch of land towards the hunters who are waiting on platform to take their shot.

The problem that we have at the moment here is that it is legal because it is not legislated. Our SPCA claims that his has never happened in South Africa before so it’s never been legislated.

Let us see how this unfolds.

As you say Chris it will be interesting to see how this unfolds. I agree that corralling animals down a stretch of land towards hunters standing on raised platforms is certainly not fair and fills me with horror.

This is the Elephant I mentioned in the poaching wars thread WS.......utterly disgusting....what a magnificent Bull Elephant he was and such a waste of a beautiful life and also a waste of an Elephant that could have helped secure the numbers of Elephants with his breeding.......i'm utterly appalled by this killing and I hope he gets named and shamed like cecils murderer.........please let there be an end to this one day soon.
