Re: Mara Triangle Monthly Reports
It's a shocking, shocking story that has so disappointed me about the Mara. Lion numbers are already on the decrease, dangerously so and for this to happen is just truly awful and quite frankly unacceptable. It could have been worse had Joseph Ole Koyie from Olonana, who witnessed the attack, not notfied the Mra Triangle

Thanks Doogs. Very interesting reports. Long but worth reading, especially April and the section on Security.

Re: Mara Triangle Monthly Reports
Thanks Doogs. It still seems that the bad news on Vulture numbers is continuing some alarming drops, and the story on the two Giraffes, and possible deaths from anthrax is really worrying. Pity there was no Vet there, or the could'nt have sent samples of for confirmation

"Since yesterday we have been receiving reports of Olerian warrior group wanting to hunt one of our lions near the escarpment. The rangers have gone up to warn off the warriors camping on the escarpment. The ...group was accompanied by witch doctor who has given the warriors dawa for their success and given okay for the hunt... We are in for a busy week..."
Hope the Rangers manage to keep the Lions safe

A hippo attacked a tourist vehicle on the 30th, fortunately no one was hurt, although there was a fair amount of damage to the vehicle. This hippo has been seen on a regular basis near the hippo pools and has taken to spending the day in the drainage ditches off the road. A fast-moving, oncoming car probably startled the hippo.
Yikes

Scary. I've heard of Elephants, and Rhinos attacking vehicles, but not Hippos. Anyone heard of it happening before ?.

Re: Mara Triangle Monthly Reports
Me neither but are hippos not supposed to be the most dangerous animals in Africa, I'm sure I've read that somewhere
"This photo was taken by ranger Bett who helped the guests when the hippo attacked the tour van on Sept 30th. This tour van was a victim of this accident as they were not doing anything wrong when hippo bit the car. The oncoming speeding car which startled the hippo and caused it to attack this vehicle was from Serena Lodge.
The lower teeth tore the body and upper teeth smashed the window, but no guests were injured. The guest left us a little note saying that our rangers who reported to the scene to help the guests were very professional and helpful".

Re: Mara Triangle Monthly Reports
That must have been so scary. What an awful shock for them.
I found this via Google

I found this via Google
The hippo is responsible for more human fatalities in Africa than any other large animal. Male hippos actively defend their territories which run along the banks of rivers and lakes. Females have also been known to get extremely aggressive if they sense anyone coming in between their babies, who stay in the water while she feeds on the shore. Hippos can run at speeds of over 20 miles an hour and they have enormous jaws which host up to 20 inch canines.
