Re: The Wonderful World of Australia
Lovely link Doogsy! Yes, we are a very multi-cultural country (as a basic example we have a number of employees of Sri Lankan descent in my office), and yes, this is not very well highlighted by shows like Neighbours and Home & Away. No, not every tennage girl is a blonde beach babe
The Sound Of Music being on instead of a big Rugby Union match in Victoria is so funny and true. I am a Victorian, and yes, most of us don't give two owly hoots about the bledisloe cup (sorry Foxrobin!)
Last year the media seemed to whinge a lot about the lack of Australian gold medals in London, but most fair minded people (hopefully at least 75% of us) don't have a "there ain't no second prize" attitude (though some athletes do, the reaction of our four rowers to ONLY winning silver was disgraceful). Australia did awesome at London. I've never understood how a country that wins 50 medals can be below one that wins 15 on the table, just because of gold medals. Why not do it on a 3, 2, 1 point basis?
And for goodness sakeness, I am a Newcastle United supporter. I can't just appreciate winning
The apparently welcoming nature of us being offset by all these laws stopping people from getting in is a good point. This is a difficult issue though. We can certainly accept some more people, but the world is way too massively over populated; we certainly can't save everyone despite our riches...not even close. We might say that in each individual case that we should let someone in, but then with a population of 80 million does the living standard for all of us suffer? It's really a catch 22.
And I think that with any country there will be many false stereotypes.
