Favourite Animals List!
My reasons for selection vary from a genuine love for the actual animal, to a love for conversation/metaphorical meaning about it, to a combination of both. One reason can also influence the other. It got me thinking though; like for example, maybe one day I shell get one of those fish sort of tanks, but have it as a rainforest style setup which contains an abundance of snails! Imagine how cookie that would be for anyone entering my premises!
I am not really sure if my list is accurate, so may do regular updates! And I have probably forgotten an animal or two. Initially it was going to be a top ten perhaps, and then I just kept on thinking of more animals! Anyhoo, list your favourites!!!
1. Jack Russell (plus dogs in general)
2. Leopard
3. Giraffe
4. Sparrow (just the super strong ones)
5. Squirrel (particularly those that speak quickly)
6. Hippo
7. Snail
8. Polar Bear
9. Owly
10. Unicorn (all of whom have wings)
11. Elephant
12. Rabbit (especially the Queen ones)
13. Bongo/Lesser Kudu
14. Gyrfalcon
15. Blue Crane
16. Cheetah
17. Meerkat
18. Seal
19. Grey Minor
20. Fox (particularly when combined with a robin)
21. Domestic Cat (or Kitten)
22. Kangaroo
23. Crab
24. Whale
25. Penguin
26. Zebra
27. Kookaburra
28. Possum
29. Mosquito (the likeable vampires of the world)
30. Ostrich (and I’m outta here!)
• Wangaratta not included as not a ‘known’ mythical creature, at least not yet

Re: Favourite Animals List!
That's an interesting list GR and for sure some of those are on mine.
I will go away and and then list my top 10 or 20 but it will take me time as I seem to love most animals/birds now!
Mythical creatures? mmmmmmmm okay but a unicorn would be on my list and who says it is mythical???

Re: Favourite Animals List!
Interesting lists GR and Lai and this is a great thread GR. we all share a passion for animals but it's interesting to see everyones top 10 or 30. My mind is already going whizz, whizz, whizz with animals and no doubt they are all jumping at No1, so I will go and calm down and really get my list in order and come back later

Re: Favourite Animals List!
"Mythical creatures? mmmmmmmm okay but a unicorn would be on my list and who says it is mythical???" - That's exactly what my character Universitycorn says! Love it!!!
Sounds like you will soon be up to a top 30 like me...at least
And don't feel bad about FORGETTING the elephant, though that is extra funny! Because REMEMBER that it was I who referred to you as an elephant because of your excellent (apparently) MEMORY. So it should most definitely be on my list, though not necessarily yours
Now if I put all the things on the my list that I'd been called over the years then my list probably wouldn't look quite so cute, cuddly and feathery
But I've just spotted a major sin from you Mrs Kipia. Where oh where is the rabbit on your list

Re: Favourite Animals List!
Oh GR! Why make me think after a hard working day!?
Just like on Lai's list my first three are leopards:
Amur leopard
Snow leopard
African leopard
and some other leopards...
... and then lion, Amur tiger, Sumatran tiger and other tigers
... and domestic cats must be in top 3 also...
Honestly, I cannot drop any of my favourite animals from top 3! All big and small cats are there, and dogs, and elephants, rhinos, giraffes... horses (especially Lipizzan horses because I met them last summer) ... this is so difficult!
I am shocked that domestic cats are 22nd on GR's list!!! And what is SNAIL doing there? Number 8!!!

Re: Favourite Animals List!
Oh my goodness I'm going to have to have a good before compiling my list. The problem is who to put in front of who, i.e. does a gorilla (who I love) come before a cheetah (who I also love) and before cats and dogs (again who I love) very difficult to sort out.
Impressed with your 30 strong list GR and some very interesting selections like a ; a crab ; mosquito ; ostrich - none of them would be on my list but hey, each to their own and good to see some 'different' selections
Your list was basically what I would have expected from you Lai - except of course your and omissions, that was unexpected
You have also got your hat on for this LW, looking forward to seeing your 'list'

Re: Favourite Animals List!
Doogs - am I that predictable? I may have to add something strange and quirky - except that I am still changing my mind and order of list since I had 2 grave omissions
and to be added .....
CC I am laughing at your top 3 -
Doogs - you must have boxers and horses at the top too???

Re: Favourite Animals List!
A wee bit Lai but honestly it's meant in a nice way. We've known each other a long time through the forum and there would be something wrong if I couldn't guess a number of those animals you have on your list I think you should re-do your list as a Top 20 then you can casually add in and as though they'd been there all along Will you add any of the following to your list . . . hedgehog ; impala ; wildies ; topi ; lilac breasted roller bird ; egyptian geese ; secretary bird ; bees ; rhino to name but a few
Boxers and horses will definitely be high on my list

Re: Favourite Animals List!
Doogs and yes I love your idea and will certainly do that today, also you are sooooooooo right, where were the wildie boys and the LBR and all those wonderful African creatures I love so much?
Top 20 is going to be tricky, may amend to top 30
This is going to be great once we all complete our 'works in progress'

Re: Favourite Animals List!
this thread is really going off!!!
And I am laughing so much at some of these posts, especially CC's So much variation in that top three!!!
And the unpopularity of the snail Don't worry guys, it will grow on you slowly
And come on, they're really quite awesome when you think about it. They have a mobile home, and its eyes (or are they ears ) make them appear to be very extraterrestrial. And they are healthy eaters (love to nom nom nom on their veggies), so very fit creatures, which is important when it takes so long to get from a to b. There are other reasons, though I forget them just now
And they are at number seven on my list, even higher than eight
I think these lists will be forever 'works in progress', and that's part of the fun!
By the way, ostrich has gotten a gig on my list due to all the related discussion surrounding it It's a good example of this list not just being about the actual animal, as in what would one want as a pet or something, but when you think of a particular animal it might make you think of something funny and/or loving, and that can be a reason for its inclusion

GR - snail explanation is totally true and therefore very S
I thought that might be the case with Wham
and it made me laugh.
Very good with the JR and the snail - you picked a good smiley when you found that one

Re: Favourite Animals List!
Hehe, I have to add two more leopard subspecies to my top 3 list: Sri Lankan leopard because I met an adorable cub Nuwa with her mom Toni a year ago at Bioparc Fuengirola, and Persian leopard because I met one at Tallinn Zoo.
I suppose it is ok that I have five leopards on my top 3 list?
Doogs the snails can never be very high on my list, or probably not at all. Snails are slimy or whatever, and I really do't want them to grow on me.

Re: Favourite Animals List!
with LW, 'Animals' just covers everything and they are all at No.1
Good to see you've started your list WS and a lot of my favourites are on yours
CC - Looks like you could have a Top 10 purely of different leopard species

CC I think I am with you there, leopards of all shapes and sizes and species would do for me
Then I also agree with WS - WILDLIFE
But I also agree with Littlewid - ANIMALS
So now I really must stop all this and do my list, again
