Alum – Its History and Mystery

A joint Day School with Cleveland and Teesside Local History Society and Cleveland Industrial Archaeology Society looking at the many different aspects of the alum industry of East Cleveland.

Eskdale Alum Walk

We will take a walk around the remains of some of the smaller alum works found in the Esk Valley.

Monday 11th October 10:30am (5 hours)

Saltburn to Skinningrove Walk

Join Beth for a walk along the coast from Saltburn to Skinningrove and back. Learn about the many different industries carried out on this stretch of shoreline including the alum house being exposed within the cliffs at Saltburn..

Meet: at the Slipway by the Ship Inn - please don’t park in the pub car park. (NZ 669216)

Clitherbeck Coals

Take a walk around this lovely part of the moors and learn about the trade and exploitation of Moor Coal.

27th-28th October 10:00am – 2:30pm

Get Arty with Ammonites

Draw a dinosaur or get arty with ammonites, come along and paint your own t-shirt design. Have a go at this fun, free half term event and take home your finished work.

Wednesday 27th: Flatts Lane Country Park

Thursday 28th: Margrove Heritage Centre, Margrove Park

These events are open to all but under 12s must be accompanied by an adult.

Sandsend and Kettleness Alum Works

Take this chance to stroll around the last alum works to close along the Yorkshire Coast and visit the alum mining village of Kettleness.

Guisborough Forest Lost Industry Wander

Join Beth for a Stroll around Guisboruogh Forest to look at some of the earliest remains of the Alum Industry in East Cleveland.

Loftus Handale Walk

Take a stroll though this quiet part of East Cleveland and learn about its monastic roots and dragon slaying myths and local geological hero Louis Hunton.

Errington Woods Walk

From Greek philosophers to Harry Potter, find out about the fascinating and at times controversial subject of alchemy.

Cleveland Street Walk

Come along on this walk along part of Cleveland Street. Look at the remains of several ironstone mines, learn the history of Freeborough Hill and see the wonderful views along the route of this historic path.

Trade on the Tees

A walk around the picturesque town of Yarm looking at the rise and fall of the busiest port on the Tees.
