Re: Our Feeding Stations :):)
Thanks for the tip on the banana WS. I always have them in the house as I eat loads, so I will now buy some extra for the birds.
Glad your little nuthatch is back Lai but not good you needed to get new feeders, I suppose that can happen with the heavier birds.
Loving the pictures of your little Sparrow PPH, he looks a lovely little fellow.
I have been getting starlings feeding regularly, well I think they are starlings, they swarm in together and eat like mad. I have brought some fat balls today and yesterday I put out some chopped apple for them to try and give a bit of variety. I have got a couple of pics and will try and post them today or tomorrow but they are only taken through the window so not brilliant.

Well done PPH I'm still trying to get a Pic of our Robin no luck up till now You also did well to get your Sparrow. Your windows are alot bigger than ours so it's really difficult for you to get a shot without the Birds seeing you. Ours are smaller, and chest hight so it's easyier.

Lovely picture PPH. He almost matches your christmas avatar As yet I haven't seen a Robin but still got all the Starlings feeding. Will try and load some pics and try and get some good ones from behind my patio doors.

Re: Our Feeding Stations :):)
it was hard to get, it took 5 goes to get a good one, the rest are of empty feeders or 2 of them are of a Robin's bottom
Its hard as they both land on the feeder and fly off really quickly, I think I got this one as he was moving from having a drink to feeding from the tray so I managed to get him before he hopped over

To true LW. Mine is only a cheap camera, but it has an option which most og the digital cameras have of instead of ytaking a single shot you can set it to continous, mine then takes 3 shots one after the other. It helps sometimes when the subject starts to move as you take it, you get a 3 in 1 chance of getting a good shot

Re: Our Feeding Stations :):)
I have been meaning to post some pics of my feeding station so thought now was a good moment. The birds are now eating me out of house and home, I have just had to buy more food today to keep them going. They love the fat pellets with insects in and today I have brought them meal worms and food to attract Robins and other birds. At the moment it's the starlings that are feeding well and with the impending bad weather I want to make sure all the little birds have something they like.
This pic is of the first bird having a look and trying to be brave to go eat.
Then he braved it.
Then a little while later there were three.
Now I always have lots of them and there is always a battle for the food but it's lovely to see and i'm so happy they have found the food and water and hopefully look forward to lots more visiting birds.
Sorry about the poor quality of the pics but they were taken through my patio doors and from a little distance so as not to scare the birds off.

That's so exciting Littlewid, that they've now found you. Now it's a never ending source of food for them so you've got to be out there topping everything up all the time, come snow or shine but it's so lovely to see all the birds visit, it's well worth the bad weather!
Thanks for sharing your photos.

Well done LW it's great to see your Birds. We used to have loads of Starlings at the last place although they dwindled down over the years. About 5 years ago we counted 63 on the roofs around us, but the last year they were down there, they had gone down to 8, which is an indication of how the numbers have declined. They loved Mrs S's own food mix, they prefered it to fat balls. We would put it in a log that had holes drilled through it. They could,nt get enough of it. We now use the plastic trays that some of the fat bars come in, we put the mix in them then leave them to set in the fridge, take them out, and put them in the fat bar cage. The Birds here seem to prefer them to the bought ones, and its cheaper

We got home at 3-00pm today. I filled all the feeders this morning, but it had started snowing as we came home. By the time we got home the seed tray that I had filled with sunflower seed, and suet with mealworm pellets was empty. We put some more in, but the snow was covering it up quite fast. The Birds were going mad on the feeders as you can see
The Birds are really struggling in this cold weather, especialy the small ones to get enough food to just give them the energy to survive the night. I know our forum members, are doing there best to help to feed them, but if any of our guests can help thats got to be good news for our feathered friends

this was how my feeders looked this morning, I went out to clean them but 20mins later they are covered with snow again. Ive gone out again to clear the snow away but its going to be a stuggle to keep them clear. Ive had plenty of visitors and the blackbird cleared away some of the snow and the little ones have been able to find the food

Re: Our Feeding Stations :):)
Same here - all covered in snow but not as much as you WS. It's nice out there now so the birds have made the most of it, but I'll have to fill up the tray on the ground again as the pheasants have been in and emptied it already.

Re: Our Feeding Stations :):)
we've had about 5inches of snow and I have lost the battle to keep my feeders clear of snow as its been snowing hard all day. I am very proud of the little birds that visit me especially the blackbird who lands on the feeder and digs down and shoves the snow away with his beak to get to the food. This is an added bonus for the little birds who can then come in after him and can reach the food

Re: Our Feeding Stations :):)
PPH you are doing a great job there, 5 inches is a huge amount for those little birds to get through. Lucky the blackbird is determined, and how lucky the birds are to have you.
We've got off lightly today, after snow last night it's been clear all day - not sure what tonight will bring
Hope you don't get anymore PPH and your birds are okay

Looks like you got what we had PPH, and its people like you that keep our Feathered friends alive. It's unusual for Blackbirds to go on a feeder, so thats a really good bonus, especialy for the smaller Birds. I've noticed that quite a few of the Birds are doing things they do'nt normaly do. We've had Chaffinches trying to hover to get to the Nut feeder, a Robin perched on the Seed feeder. They are normaly ground feeders, or table feeders like the Blackbird. It just goes to show how desperate they are for food

Re: Our Feeding Stations :):)
That was a feeding frenzy WS but i'm not surprised in this cold weather, the birds need all they can get. Your Blackbird is a clever bird PPH and at least he is also helping the little birds by clearing the snow. We have been very lucky and only had a little amount of snow so my feeder has not been covered this time but the starlings are eating like mad and I went and brought more food today, I have a right old stock so I dont run out over christmas, but like you lot who are more than likely concerned too, I am wondering if I will have enough as they are eating so much, it seems as though it constantly needs topping up. The water keeps freezing but luckily the water feature has constant running water and the birds do drink from there as well.
All the pics are great and show how much snow everyone is getting but as WS says, it's brilliant we are all trying hard to help the birds in this hard winter for them. WAA is really doing it's best
