Can't find much to help PPH but found a forum called Birdforum where someone had been asking about Blackbirds songs.

Blackbirds (and thrushes, and all other songbirds) *have* to learn their songs from other individuals. While starlings, among others, are famous for mimicking other species, occasional mimicry is recorded from many species. One article I read a while ago (Helb et al, 1985, Zeit. Tierpsychol.) did a review and found really that most species learn their songs from the wrong species occasionally (up to 1% of the time, mostly). Blackbirds have been recorded as mimicking articifial sounds like car alarms, so it is not implausible that they could mimic thrushes.

Why do birds do this? For species like blackbirds, nobody really knows, to be honest: because it is a rare phenomenon, it is difficult to collect much data. Regular mimics like starlings tend to pick up surprising sounds in their environment. In this case, the theory is that females are also attracted by weird sounds, and the males that sing them get laid more frequently. On the other hand, if you sing a song that just sounds like a car alarm, well the birds aren't trying to attract car alarms! Mimicking birds still have to make sure that females of their own species recognize them, particularly since song is often the first point of contact between male and female. So there is this balance between incorporating weird new sounds, but making sure that you are still recognized. Regular mimics have tricks to manage this: starlings put their mimicked sounds in between segments that are very stereotypical and starling-like. Perhaps your blackbird decided that a thrush song was blackbirdy enough to suit his needs.

Blackbird songs normally consist of a combination of loud fluty whistled notes at the beginning, followed by a quieter twitter at the end. The current thinking is that the quiet twitter part at the end is actually the really aggressive part. Current research is looking at the idea that blackbirds sing different songs that are more or less aggressive by varying how much twitter there is in their songs. So maybe the songs you were hearing, which presumably lacked the twitter part were part of the bird's less aggressive arsenal of songs, which he had picked up from a song thrush.

Or not...

it looks like the 'truce' between my male blackbird and the juvenile male is over

the male blackbird was on the feeder and the juvenile decided to have some food too. the male blackbird was not happy and chased the juvenile away quite forcibly. I think that now the male blackbird is feeding babies he is less tolerant of other blackbirds in the area

The baby birds must be hatching out all over as I've just had a visit from a Great Tit taking a load of mealworms away. My Blackbird is visiting so often now and he is taking his fair share of the mealworms away aswell, although he is getting very territorial with all the other birds. I think he needs a lesson in sharing!!!

I have had a male Blackbird in my garden a lot recently, I am wondering if he is the same one as last year who's babies i rescued, it would be nice if it was him returning to feed his new babies.

Hope your juvenile Blackbird is finding enough food to eat PPH, it's a shame he has been chased off but a dad with babies is on a mission I suppose.

I think I've just seen my first Blackbird fledgling on my feeders. I'm up early to wait for a delivery and I saw my male blackbird come and collect mealworms as normal. Then a few minutes later I saw what I thought was the female but it opened its mouth, started flapping its wings and made a 'feed me' noise, The male Blackbird then fed it right there on the feeder.

Needless to say I was amazed and thought I'd never seen a male feed the female and maybe it was a fledgling as there is a similarity with a juvenile bird and a female. I checked the RSPB website and it looks like it might be a fledgling as the time of year means it could be their first brood and as the website said

"Fledged young are often left in the care of the male, while the female prepares for the next nesting attempt. The last brood of the season is usually divided between the parents, with each adult taking sole care of some of the young"

That must have given you a huge smile this morning. I bet you are now glad you got up early, it would have been a real shame to have missed that beautiful scene.
Might be worth having your camera ready in the morning incase it happens again, it would be a lovely keepsake for you.

funnily enough the starling only starting visiting me today, I had 3 on the feeder at one time. The tit (no jokes WS Laughing Laughing ) has been visiting me for about a week but is very hard to photograph as its not used to me being close to the window and also its only on the feeder for a short amount of time.

All of the photos were taken on the multi shot facility

Have you tried standing back a bit, and useing the Zoom, it works for me PPH, and you do'nt get as much reflection. The multi shot is really good, you can also use it with a fast speed shot as well

I did use the zoom function on the first picture of the Starling and it took me a few goes to work out the different multi shot speeds. I don't think I have the patience to be a wildlife photographer but I am proud of my effort and glad you mentioned the camera on here as its a lovely one and so easy to use

Great to see your photos PPH - and how lucky you are to have a Starling. Re having patience, birds I think are the hardest to photograph, they never stay still for long and it's so frustrating Laughing

managed to get these pictures this morning. They were taken very quickly as I've been trying to catch this bird for a while. again sorry about the state of the windows but with the feeder being so close to the windows and the birds being such messy eaters its a losing battle trying to keep them clean with all the seeds hitting the window all the time

I thought it was a song thrush but wasn't completely sure as it never stays on the feeder for a long time. That's why I had to quickly take the picture this morning as I've been trying to get a picture for ages.

The song thrush is also the bird for May on my bird calendar
