brilliant pics WS and isn't great that the chick is doing so well........all down to mum and dad and good for dad seeing off the intruder
I am so pleased for Lady that this chick is doing so well after last year and also with her mate being that much younger, it is such good news.

Thought I'd check the nest, it's empty and the cam is panning round so presumably the chick has gone

Re: SHES BACK!!!!!! The Lady Returns
It does seem as though he has gone doesn't it Lai, what a shame we missed him. Sadly I didn't check this cam enough and I find that sad as we also didn't get to see lady go as well, fingers crossed she will return next year.
Thanks for the link, sounds like dad wanted to make sure he had a good feed before feeding mum and the chick and boy what a stunner he turned out to be

News: Osprey chick satellite tagged at world famous nest
3rd July 2012
The osprey chick born at a world famous nest in Perthshire has been fitted with a satellite tag. The chick was born to the osprey known affectionately by many as ‘Lady’, believed to be the oldest breeding osprey in the UK, at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Loch of the Lowes reserve in Dunkeld. Thanks to funding raised by osprey fans, the Trust was able to tag this chick, the first born at Loch of the Lowes in two years. The osprey protection at Loch of the Lowes is overseen by the Trust’s Perthshire Ranger, funded by the players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
Click here to follow the osprey chick's progress online.
http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/osprey/
The chick has been fitted with a special satellite tag by osprey expert Roy Dennis. The tag fits in a lightweight harness which goes around the bird’s back and wings, like a small rucksack. The chick was sewn into the harness with a few threads at the front – leaving enough room for it to put on weight and allowing the harness to drop off at the end of its useful life.
By conducting this scientific research, we hope to gain invaluable research into the behaviour of ospreys. For example we are keen to find out what influences the route ospreys take on their migration to West Africa. Data gathered will be used in conjunction with other tagging work to build up a bigger picture of raptor migration to and from Scotland. With sufficient data it is hoped that tagging projects like this can in the future exert pressure on landowners and even governments to protect these stopping off points and destinations such as Loch of the Lowes, which are very important to the life cycles of ospreys.
The chick at Loch of the Lowes hatched six weeks ago and has been growing fast.
Scottish Wildlife Trust Perthshire Ranger Emma Rawling said:
“We now know that the chick born at Loch of the Lowes this year is a male. It is incredibly healthy and a very good weight, though not a large bird as is normal for a young male. Its development was judged normal for 6 weeks old and there was no sign of any health or developmental problems.
“Satellite tagging this chick will be enormously useful in collecting detailed information such as exact routes, timings and behaviours of migrating birds.
“Thanks to the generous support of visitors and fans online, we have been able to tag the first chick born at Loch of the Lowes since 2010.
“A map of the osprey’s journey will be on the Scottish Wildlife Trust website and I know people around the world will be keeping their eye on this to watch the bird’s migrations as it happens.
“In most cases, satellite tags last between one and three years, so we hope to get a significant amount of data from this project.”
People’s Postcode Lottery Managing Director Jo Bucci said:
“We’re proud of the continued support our players give to the Scottish Wildlife Trust ranger service in Perthshire. We’re all going to be avidly watching this bird’s progress!”

THEY ARE BOTH BACK ON THE NEST!!!!!!!!!!!
He was brought back by his mother just before 11:30 this morning and she very firmly sent him back to the nest and dive bombed him so he stayed there. She then landed on the nest proceeded to scauld (scold) him that none of us will forget, she shouted at him and pecked at him and flapped her wings at him. It was incredible to watch, I do have the footage but it’ll be tomorrow before I can edit and post it.
Will check back to see if they have put the footage on.

She's Back Again 23rd Year in a rowOsprey Diary Tues 9th April
Posted on April 9, 2013 by rangeremma
2A relatively quiet day here on the osprey nest at Loch of the Lowes with our female osprey being remarkably quiet (hardly any food begging calls) and relatively uninterested in the fish her partner has been bringing her. We don’t think is anything to worry about- she has eaten enough to be ok- but may be a sign that he is getting close to egg laying . Just one Osprey intruder today, in a casual flyover, and no big dramas on the nest, but an awful lot of fidgeting and nest rearranging which may be another good sign of imminent eggs.

I dont think we did LW it really is an amazing feat for a an Osprey of her age. The old girl may be a bit ragged round the edges, but he's still looking after her feathers, and preening a lot

Re: SHES BACK!!!!!! The Lady Returns
The Lady latest update.
She's done it again 2 eggs the 2nd is the 66thOur marvelous ospreys have done it again- very early this morning a second egg was laid- our females 66th! A cause for further celebrations here as our chances of having osprey chicks this season just doubled!
Our night watch team on duty noticed her fidgeting and straining between 1am and 1.30am, but it wasn’t until first light we were able to get a good clear view and confirm the presence of two eggs in the nest.
More news as the days goes on.

Osprey Diary Wed 24th April
Posted on April 24, 2013 by rangeremma
Well, three osprey eggs is more than I dared hope for just a few days ago- it seems like our veteran female is determined to prove our doubting her was unjustified.
We can confirm that the third egg was laid early this morning and some eagle eyed webcam viewers did indeed glimpse it around 6.45 am, but it wasn’t until later this morning that we got a really clear view. This is no surprise as the male has been bringing in huge clumps of moss and grass to the nest and it is getting deeper and deeper – the latest this evening almost as big as his mate!

Latest Lady Update
Osprey Diary 7th May Tues
Posted on May 7, 2013 by rangeremma
Spring is here in all its full glory today with the whole loch basking in warm sunshine and a gentle warm breeze- what a difference from just over a month ago when the birds first arrived from migration to an ice covered loch, and snow on a gale force wind!
It is amazing how versatile ospreys are, able to cope with climates as diverse as equatorial Africa, and Scotland’s inclement spring! The range of temperatures this covers is amazing, but we suspect heat is easier for a fishing bird to cope with (a quick dip after all helps) than deep cold.
You will have noticed both our male and female osprey panting with their beaks open on the nest today whilst incubating. This is their way of releasing excess heat (much like a dog) as they have no sweat glands.
It is interesting that they changed over incubation duties between them more often than usual today- perhaps they are doing so in response to the heat so their partner can go off and cool down. They both seem to be coping just fine and the eggs are certainly at no risk of chilling!
30 sec Video
It might have been Spring yesterday, but it's not today, by the look of the wind

Incubation continues as normal with our male and female Osprey taking turns to sit on the eggs. Last year our male spent much of his time on perches that were easily seen from the hides but we’re not so lucky this year as he seems to be following our female’s lead and staying out of sight. He once again proved his excellent fisherbird credentials by bringing in a large Blue Trout this morning, only the third of the season so far, she was away for about three hours so it must have been a good meal. Brown Trout is still the favourite catch with Pike lagging behind in a poor second, this time last year it was all about the Pike. He’s still putting things on his back while he incubates and today he added a feather to it, perhaps he feels he needs extra
It's still as windy as ever

Just caught up with all the news on here WS. Three eggs is brilliant and to think we didn't think we would see Lady again after last year, it's just blooming brilliant. They do seem be suffering with the same windy weather we are having but they seem to be feeding well. Do you know when the eggs are due to hatch WS?
