Re: Lily and Hope - The Black Bear and Cub
Not much Lily and Hope news this time but I find it fascinating to read all of the other things as well
It will be so interesting to see if Lily does give birth. What will Hope be like? I hope they get a break in the snow so they get through to install the cam. Better make sure all my work is up to date!!

Great clips, especially the last one, thanks for posting Anne-Marie. I love the photo of the bear tracks
What an amazing year it's been with these two, so many ups and downs but wonderful to follow.

Re: Lily and Hope - The Black Bear and Cub
They've just posted a video clip from March 2007 of June with Lily as a cub along with Cal and Bud. RIP Cal and Bud, so sad to know they are no longer with us because of hunters

Update December 6, 2010 – 6:50 PM CST
by Lily the Black Bear on Tuesday, 07 December 2010 at 01:47
You make a difference
Ely Memorial High School
You are making a difference for bears with your votes and donations. People around Ely are realizing that Lily fans make a difference. They get this from the occasional newspaper article, local TV broadcasts, and word of mouth.
In four days, the announcement should come that you scored $20,000 for Ely Schools in the Care2 school contest.
Today, we talked with Betty Firth, the director of the Ely Area Food Shelf, and found an ally for the bears. The address for donations to the Ely Area Food Shelf is PO Box 786, Ely, MN 55731. This update is brief.
There may or may not be one tomorrow. But the next one, whether tomorrow or the day after, will have some significant news, we hope.
Thank you for making a significant difference in the Ely area for the bears. More on that next time.

A fantastic news post!!!!
Update December 7, 2010 - 8:50 PM CST
by Lily the Black Bear on Wednesday, 08 December 2010 at 05:30
Ely City Council
Downtown Ely, MN
Today was all about passing an Ely City Council Resolution in support of protection for the radio-collared bears. To learn what kind of support there is in Ely for protection, Donna Rogers and Lynn asked for signatures of support from 70 business owners. That’s nearly all the businesses in the city limits. 68 signed. Lily fans seemed to be the deciding factor. Many of them were Lily fans themselves. Other business owners saw what you are doing for the Ely area. For example, Betty Firth, manager of the Ely Area Food Shelf, attended the City Council meeting in support. Your actions also have greatly impressed the City Council members. When they saw the overwhelming support from Ely businesses and heard your accomplishments for the Ely area recounted, it was evident they wanted protection. A hunter in the audience spoke briefly in support. The Ely City Council voted unanimously in support of the following resolution:
Ely City Council Resolution
A resolution in support of protection for radio-collared bears
Whereas, it is in the public interest to protect radio-collared bears that are uniquely valuable to science, education, bear management, and the region;
Whereas, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Bear Guides Association, Ely bear researchers, the media, and others have asked hunters not to shoot radio-collared bears for 10 years;
Whereas, the study has been recognized as one of the world’s top 4 studies of large mammals;
Whereas, all of these 8-16 radio-collared bears are part of a single clan that has been studied for generations;
Whereas, the hours required to gain the trust of these bears for research makes many of them irreplaceable in the researchers’ lifetimes;
Whereas, many hunters have asked that it be illegal to shoot radio-collared bears in fairness to hunters who voluntarily spare them for their many values;
Whereas, these bears are easily recognized by durable, long, colorful ribbons attached to their radio-collars during bear hunting season;
Whereas, information and video from these bears makes the North American Bear Center what it is;
Whereas, hunters have shot six of them since 2005, including 2 in 2010;
Therefore, be it resolved that the Ely City Council supports legal protection for radio-collared bears wearing bright-colored ribbons in central St Louis County east of Highway 53 in Townships 60-64N and asks hunter cooperation in sparing these bears elsewhere in Minnesota.
Thank you all so much for making this possible. Lily’s fans are making things possible that we never dreamed.
Adding to the delight of this good day was the sandwich materials you sent for lunch yesterday, including the Polar Bear Kisses. The thinly sliced roast beef was particularly good, or maybe it just seemed that way because Lynn was extra hungry when he ate slice after slice.
The next step for the Ely City Council Resolution is to show it to decision-makers like Governor-elect Mark Dayton, the existing DNR Commissioner, the new DNR Commissioner after January 20, our legislators Rep. David Dill and Sen. Tom Bakk, and others. It should help to show that Lily’s home town is in support of legal protection. We’re not sure how to reach the Governor-elect at this point.
Jason was hampered by the deep snow today and had to quit because of darkness. Snow depth was officially 22 inches by the end of November and more has fallen this past week.
Good news from the Den Cam Team today. Verizon is waiving its bandwidth fees, saving us thousands of dollars. The next question is signal strength. The top engineer on that is optimistic that we’ll have a decent signal, comparable to last year’s. We’re planning two cameras—one outside and one inside Lily and Hope’s den. We’re only a week and a half from installation.
This morning, Sue left for a week of family time in New Hampshire. She’ll be back in time to help with the installation. Linda Gibson will post this to Facebook post haste, and Sue will post it to bear.org and bearstudy.org after her plane lands later tonight.
The address for the Ely Area Food Shelf is PO Box 786, Ely, MN 55731.

Update December 8, 2010 – 6:14 PM CST
by Lily the Black Bear on Thursday, 09 December 2010 at 01:53
Lots of snow, but not enough ice!
sample of Den Watch data
Lynn sent Jason out prematurely to snowmobile and snowshoe to Donna’s den. When Jason reached the edge of the marsh where Donna is likely denned on an island, Jason discovered that the early, deep snow prevented the marsh from freezing. We believe it is the second time she had used this ‘unreachable’ den.
So Jason came back and resumed work on the Den Watch data that many of you contributed last winter and spring. There is a lot of good, publishable data there. We’re seeing how we can improve on that this coming den-watching season.
Work continues on protecting radio-collared bears, getting ready to install den cams, and catching up on paperwork that includes data analysis and reviewing education outreach materials.
Thank you for all you are doing.

Re: Lily and Hope - The Black Bear and Cub
Update December 9, 2010 – 7:32 PM CST
by Lily the Black Bear on Friday, 10 December 2010 at 02:47
More Snow!
Big snow this morning—at least 7 inches. Some bears will be too hard to get to until spring—even for young Jason (25). We very much want to get to all the dens with cubs before the bears leave so we can find out litter sizes before the cubs are out in the big world. Last night temperatures were 3 to 7 degrees below zero F. Temperatures range widely when it is cold because pockets of cold air settle here and there. This morning, it was 20 above, windy, and snowing like mad.
With all the snow, Jason worked more on your good den watch data from last year. We want to extract publications from that data with thanks to all who gathered it. And we want to know how to do even better in data collection this winter. A picture in last night’s update showed a portion of the form the data are in now.
Lily and Hope’s den(s) cam are scheduled to be installed December 18, so that occupies a lot of people’s minds—including the question of how we are all going to get to the den area in this snow. We’ll be doing some long snowmobile rides, it looks like.
Facebook continues to make changes that test our collective patience and resourcefulness. Folks have had a hard time enlarging the update pictures. In order to enlarge the update pictures in Facebook you need to open the update from within Lily the Black Bear’s Notes. Then, before you click to view the entire update, you can click to enlarge the picture. Once you have clicked to expand the update you cannot enlarge the picture until you go back to the Notes page by either clicking the ‘back’ button or by clicking on the ‘Lily the Black Bear’s Notes’ link just under Lily’s picture in the upper left of the screen. Another solution is to go to bear.org or bearstudy.org to read the updates. The pictures click big there without any extra steps.
Someone asked how we get the birds to land on our hands. Mainly time. A shortcut we tried years ago was putting a mannequin out to get the birds used to landing on a human shape. But the current batch of trusting birds took time a couple years ago. They come back each winter, and other birds get the idea and do the same. If we walk up the driveway or into the woods, several Chickadees and the occasional Red-breasted Nuthatch will follow. For Pine Siskins, American Goldfinches, and Common (or Hoary) Redpolls, the easiest way to get started is to have food on a big tray—big enough so a flock can land. Fill your hand with black oil sunflower seed kernels (i.e. no shells), then slowly approach the tray and put your hand next to the tray. The birds will quickly hop on. Redpolls are probably the tamest, followed by Siskins, and then Goldfinches. But as far as learning to follow and expect handouts, Black-capped Chickadees are the winners, followed by Red-breasted Nuthatches. But then, if you change the food, individual preferences show up. Covering your hat and shoulders with black niger thistle seeds does nothing for Chickadees and Nuthatches, but we’ve had as many as 17 Siskins and Goldfinches eating on a person at once.
Once upon a time, a Red-breasted Nuthatch learned that we were sources of mealworms in early summer when she was raising her brood. She would spot us from far away, take a mealworm, fly to her nest, and come back over and over. Gray Jays are notoriously easy to get to land on a hand in campgrounds, but we haven’t yet done that here. For those, suet is a better attractant than the sunflower seeds we use. Hand-feeding birds is a fun mind-reliever while taking a short break from writing—or walking to the mailbox a quarter mile away. Each year the Chickadees get more responsive to a hand being held out. A couple days ago, 51 Chickadees, including repeats, landed in quick succession in 5 minutes as the sun was going down and they were tanking up for the night.
A Lily fan designed the nice ‘Thank You to the City of Ely’ for their support toward protecting radio-collared bears. Someone said we should take out a big ad in the local newspapers and include the ‘Thank You’ design. We’re giving that some thought.
Tomorrow is the announcement, we believe, for the $20,000 you voted for Ely’s Schools. The Ely Area Food Shelf called and was delighted to get the first three donations from Lily fans. It’s harder to send donations there because they don’t have a pay pal account and can only get checks addressed to Ely Area Food Shelf, PO Box 786, Ely, MN 55731. Betty Firth is the manager there.
Thank you for all you are doing to show the importance of radio-collared bears to Ely.

Re: Lily and Hope - The Black Bear and Cub
Update December 10, 2010 – 9:00 PM CST
by Lily the Black Bear on Saturday, 11 December 2010 at 04:13
Ted and Lucky Den Cam Closer to Reality
Ted as seen by the den cam today!
Today was a day of frustrations for Lynn. Yesterday he reached the storage limit on his email server so today he enlisted a technician to help resolve the problem. Those of us dependant on the nearly instantaneous ebb and flow of information via email can identify with his frustration! Add to that the fact Lynn is feeling under the weather and went home early to crawl into bed. And to top it off, Sue is traveling to visit family in hilly New England where cell coverage can be spotty, so she has not been the promised ‘just a phone call away.’ Others have stepped in to fill the gaps and transfer information to ensure this update gets posted.
The bright spot today was some exciting news from the North American Bear Center!
A few months ago, Jason Sawyer came up with the idea of putting a video camera in Ted and Lucky's den. He researched equipment needs and consulted with Graham Wallington, Bill Powers, and Doug Hajicek—some of the technical crew working on the Lily and Hope den cam—before ordering the equipment. Today, with help from Donna Andrews and John Leonard, Jason installed the camera in the backside of Ted and Lucky's den.
Everything went well and soon the Ted and Lucky den cam will be broadcast live over the Internet as well as at the Bear Center for visitors to see. We are currently consulting with possible hosts for live transmissions and will let you know as soon as we have more information.
Donna Andrews recorded a quick snippet of video off of the computer monitor with her point and shoot camera. Here is the link to show you the view you will soon be getting https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=148158965233990. The video shows Ted and Lucky moving around because, in order to keep them from licking the lens, they were given new leaves and bedding material to keep them occupied during the installation.
The snows and warmer temps (20 F) of yesterday have ended. It’s now back to cold (0 F) and sunny.
More good news
The North American Bear Center and the International Wolf Center had jointly applied for a $10,000 matching grant to help pay for advertising. Today we found out we were approved! More details tomorrow!

Thank you once again for your all you do.

Re: Lily and Hope - The Black Bear and Cub
(please note, I'm excited by this update and I think you all will be too)

The Bear Family & Me
June's yearling working the camera
Lynn’s email was up and running by mid-afternoon, so today became a day of catching up the final preparations for Lily and Hope’s den cam. Verizon is firming up as a partner.
Another piece of news, the BBC’s Head of Scheduling saw the 1-hour TV program that was filmed last spring of Lily and Hope, and she loved it! She moved the series of three 1-hour programs to prestigious slots on three consecutive days starting the 3rd of January. That’s little more than 3 weeks away! The series will air on BBC2 in the UK at 9 PM on January 3rd, 4th, and 5th. The name of the series is “The Bear Family & Me,” with “me” being Gordon Buchanan of Scotland. All 3 shows star Lily and Hope and, to some extent, Juliet and her 3 cubs. Let your UK friends know these dates. The bigger splash it makes in the UK, the more likely it will air in the US and make a greater difference for bears. No air date has been set for North America, but our friend Tim Martin is currently here in the US working on it.
Today, we asked Betty Firth, head of the Ely Area Food Shelf, how Lily fans would be recognized for contributing to the Food Shelf. We were happy to hear that all donors are listed in the local newspapers and that people who identify themselves as Lily fans would have their own section in the newspaper. That kind of recognition of Lily fans and the importance of Lily, Hope, and the other radio-collared to this area can only help build support for protection.
It’s official, Lily fans succeeded in voting $20,000 for Ely’s Schools. The link is http://www.care2.com/schoolcontest/contest_updates.html . The article starts right out saying “Fans of Lily the Bear and the North American Bear rallied behind Ely Esy of Ely, Minnesota, and lifted them to the number one spot, winning them $20,000.” We were glad to see the Lily fans recognized for their efforts. Your power for good is becoming known, and is the main reason 68 of the 70 Ely business owners we queried signed in favor of protection for radio-collared bears. If protection becomes a legislative issue, rather than just a DNR issue, we’ll also want to have conservation organizations on board with us, and your good reputation will help that happen. It is amazing how difficult it is to get a small change in the law to protect about a dozen radio-collared bears in one part of the state, but with you working with us, we’ll never stop trying. Momentum is growing. We’ll be surprised if our maximum efforts this year do not result in the change needed for the good of science, education, and the state.
Thank you for all you are doing.

Team Protect’s letter-writing campaign
We need to clarify Ely’s support of protection for radio-collared bears. The City Council’s resolution does not give protection; it simply gives support for protection. Actual protection has to come from the state level—either as a Commissioner’s order from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources or from the legislature. Governor-elect Mark Dayton is in the process of selecting a DNR Commissioner. That’s why Team Protect is making a big push to write and send letters on Monday to:
Governor-elect Mark Dayton
Transition Office
800 Minnehaha Avenue East, Suite 201
St Paul, MN 55106
The link for details and talking points is at https://www.facebook.com/lily.the.black.bear#!/topic.php?uid=263755115498&topic=19080. We doubt Mark Dayton will select a commissioner on the basis of his stand on radio-collared bears, but if Dayton voices support for protection, it should make a difference. He has said jobs and the economy are two of his main goals as governor. The radio-collared bears are certainly good for Minnesota’s economy. That’s the big reason the Ely City Council and Ely business owners are on board with this. The research bears become more valuable to science each year as the background on each bear grows. June, with her 7 years of detailed background data, would be irreplaceable in our lifetimes. Each year, another chapter in her life unfolds in the context of all she has done so far. It’s becoming the same with other research bears such as Juliet, Braveheart, Dot, Donna, Lily and Hope, etc. They have revealed so much about their lives, giving us a basis for comparisons in the future.
Lynn loved the picture Sue found to go with last night’s update which mentioned the BBC series ‘Bear Family & Me’ which airs in the UK on January 3, 4, and 5 at 9 PM. The camera the bear is exploring costs over $100,000, but who could get better pictures of bears than the bears themselves? We’re looking forward to the series. Each segment of the UK version is a full 60 minutes. When and if it is broadcast in North America, each will be about 43 minutes to make room for ads. We hope to get copies of the full UK version of the series to sell at the Bear Center.
You may have already seen this news broadcast about Lily and Hope and the den cam, but if not, here’s the link http://beforeitsnews.com/story/305/043/UP_NORTH:_Following_up_on_Ely_s_favorite_bears,_Lily_Hope.html.
This next one is probably premature because it isn’t going to air until 8:25 AM Central Time on Friday, Christmas Eve, on WOJB radio, 88.9 FM, in Wisconsin. The interviewer Lissa Radke is a Lily fan and, as is true of all the Lily fans Lynn meets, she knew Lily facts and all about the clan of research bears. Lynn says talking to Lily fans is like talking to old friends—an immediate bond. Lissa covered Lily, Hope, the den cam, diversionary feeding, misconceptions, etc. The program is called ‘Big Sea Shining Water’ and is about the people, places, and natural environment of Lake Superior. The best way for Lily fans to listen to the program is to go to the WOJB web site (www.wojb.org) on Dec 24 at 8:25 AM CST and click on the link ‘Listen Live Online.’
Sue Gottscho's compilation 'Den Days'
Another project is coming together to add to the Lily and Hope exhibit at the Bear Center. Sue Gottscho’s book ‘Den Days’ is close to joining Kristin and Moe McKibbage’s beautiful album and Olatz’s beautiful book ‘Lily & Hope – the light of the Northwoods’ in the exhibit.
According to Betty Firth, director of the Ely Area Food Shelf, the only way to donate is by checks written to the Food Shelf and sent to PO Box 786, Ely, MN 55731. She will list names and perhaps states in the local papers to show the support from Lily fans and how the radio-collared bears and their fans benefit Ely.
Thank you for all you do.

by Lily the Black Bear on Tuesday, 14 December 2010 at 03:56
Things are happening
The ‘Lily the Black Bear’ Facebook page passed another milestone today—119,000 fans! A veritable army of interest and support.
Progress is being made toward protection of radio-collared bears. You are writing many good letters to Governor-elect Mark Dayton! Thank you Team Protect and thank you all! A legislator called with ideas for helping get protection, and another legislator sent an email with ideas for the same.
We heard from the BBC that the three “The Bear Family & Me” programs will re-air in the UK at the kid-friendly time of 6:30 PM on three consecutive Saturdays—January 8, 15, and 22. This is good news!
We are one cold day closer to getting the den cam going. We say ‘cold’ because the temperature along the road to the research center varied from -17 to -24 F today. We’re hoping it’s a little warmer when we have to install the den cam. We also worry that not everything will work right at first. Although we are working with some of the top technicians in the world on this project, none has ever created a web cam under these cold, northern conditions. They have calculated solar power using sun conditions available through the solar panel manufacturer and through NASA. Ely doesn’t get a lot of sun in winter. The sun is low in the sky and we have short days with lots of clouds. But this is one reason we are starting three weeks earlier than last year—so by the time births are happening (that we absolutely do not want to miss!) the bugs will be worked out. Things might be especially iffy the first couple weeks because, just 3 days after the den cam is set up, Jason is leaving for over a week. We are concerned Murphy’s Law will get us during that time.
12-point buck visits the research center
A 12-point white-tailed deer with the biggest antlers Lynn has ever seen on a live deer visited the research center and emptied the feeder outside the window. He is also one of the skinniest deer Lynn has seen, and it’s only December. A check around the area showed that at least 4 other people are feeding him, so hopefully he will fatten up a bit. Everyone recognized him by his big antlers with one broken tine. It’s the first time we’ve ever seen him here at the research center.
You are keeping up the drum-beat of what the radio-collared bears bring to the area by sending donations to the Ely Area Food Shelf at PO Box 786, Ely, MN, 55731. The results of your last major effort to help Ely got additional mention today at http://www.fox21online.com/news/ely-school-district-wins-20000.
And your donations are making a difference. It is truly unbelievable that your generosity has brought the Bear Center debt so far down. When the Give MN money comes in and your auction donations are tallied, the debt will be under $129,000. Thank you Team Bear and thank you all again!
Thank you for all you do!
