Re: Snow Leopards
Guys, I have some sad news!
On my last visit to the zoo in January I did not see Tara at all; I was wondering a bit because I know pretty well where to look at. I could see only Erkhet and Valma, the other snow leopard female. They were sharing the enclosure, which was strange enough because I never had seen them sharing before.
Today I heard that Tara has been euthanized due to serious kidney problems.
It is so sad! Tara was such a beautiful leopard, and what a great mom she was!
One more picture of Tara, this was taken in September:
How much I loved her!

Re: Snow Leopards
such sad news CC but kidney failure is not a good illness to have so I am sure the zoo took the best decision so Tara didn't suffer.
RIP Tara - she really was a beautiful leopard.

Re: Snow Leopards
CC that is so sad to hear, I know she meant a lot to you and she became a favourite with a lot of us on here too. That photo of her is just so beautiful, her eyes are so captivating. As you say, she was a wonderful mum and I am positive she will be missed by many and it must have been a hard decision for the Zoo and the vets but sadly their is no way back from Kidney failure in cats. It can be managed in its mildest form for a while but it never stays static and its a painful death if not treated aggressively in the first instance or if the cat is not euthanized before it gets to the really painful stage, so they have done the right thing for Tara even though it is such a blow.

Re: Snow Leopards
Very sad for you CC about the Tara news That must have come as a very nasty shock, and sorry that you didn't get to say goodbye to this animal that you loved
But you will always have your lovely memories of her from your many visits to look fondly back on, plus of course many photogenic pictures
As has been said, I'm sure that the zoo keepers would have made the best decision in the interests of the leopard, so she will be in no pain now.

Re: Snow Leopards
Life goes on at the Helsinki Zoo, where Erkhet and Valma are now the only snow leopards. I have visited the zoo already four times this year, and almost every time I have seen them share the enclosure. I do not know if they have been mating, but they seem to like each others company a lot.
Valma's behaviour has changed now when she is the only female. She used to be quite shy and spend a lot of time on her own, showing not very much interest in the other snowies' doings. Now she is playful and active; a totally different leopard person!
Here she comes:
Valma found a shabby ball, the same one the girls used to play with:
Erkhet was sitting up on the deck, watching Valma's every move:
Valma climbed up to Erkhet with the ball in her mouth:
The ball fell down, and Erkhet jumped down to get it. Valma took Erkhet's place on the deck; maybe that was her intention from the very beginning?
Here she is, looking quite happy:
It may be that the zoo is looking for a new breeding female to replace Tara, but it may also be possible that Valma surprises us all one day...

Re: Snow Leopards
great pictures CC. That's nice to hear that Valma is thriving after the death of Tara, she has obviously got a new found confidence now that she is the only female. I hope you are right in that she might surprise everyone and get pregnant. She is a beautiful cat and that mark on her nose is very distinctive

Re: Snow Leopards
The Helsinki Zoo announced the big news today: Valma has four cubs!!
Actually I knew already that she has cubs, but I did not know how many. Two boys, two girls.
I guess the zoo would not have published this yet unless Valma had not decided to come out with the babies. They are only 6-7 weeks old today.
This is the first time for 34 years when there are so many cubs in one litter.
Here is the link to the zoo's webpage; unfortunately it is in Finnish only, but the photos are multilingual:

That is fantastic news CC and so nice after the death of Tara. You are right photo's are multilingual and those are definitely cute snowie cubs for sure. Well done to Valma and Erkhet, it really is lovely news and I have a huge smile now after reading that and seeing the pictures of the little cubs.
Your pictures are wonderful as ever, sorry I missed them before. It's so nice to see Valma and Erkhet happy together.
Thanks so much for the update CC and I bet you are planning a visit to go and see them

Re: Snow Leopards
The Helsinki snow leopard four puppies
The island's ten-year high lumileopardinaaras week later I gave birth to her first litter in the nest cave in the dark. Puppies will be as many as four - the Zoo was born lumileopardineloset only once before, 34 years ago.
The puppies have two females and two males, all over two kilograms or less. After weighing the parent bore offspring outside the shelter to hide in a cave, in which case the luckiest zoo visitors saw the puppies. Small Snow leop thrive in most cases on a nest under the aegis of the cave, but kurkistelevat been curiously outside world.
The Helsinki male and female snow leopard has its own farm through, and they face other than the mating period. Type of home region, the Central Asian mountains, snow-covered slopes, the snow leopard territorial boundaries can be so far apart that the reproductive partner found. As a result, the snow leopard is an endangered species; them in the wild is estimated to be around 5,000 individuals.
Helsinki Zoo is lisäännyttänyt snow leopards and studied since the 1960s. Now the pups born in the genome can be found in the wild orphans rescued individuals with the genetic heritage, which is rare in zoos and therefore the birth of the puppies is a happy news for the species farmed population. The Zoo supports the conservation of the species in the wild Snow Leopard Trust.

Re: Snow Leopards
Hi guys,
I don't remember how many times I have visited the zoo since the news of the snowie cubs was broken, but every time I have been there, Valma has kept her treasures hidden up in the cage. I will try again next Sunday, keep your fingers crossed that she finally brings them out! So far I have managed only this kind of picture, as a kind of proof that they really are there:

Re: Snow Leopards
I've been reading this thread since I found it by accident when searching for more information on the Korkeasaari snow leopards. I visited the zoo on Monday and was very lucky. All the snow leopards came out just before closing time for half an hour.
Unfortunately as a new user I cannot embed the pics here, but you can see them at
s40.photobucket.com/user/s-s-t-/library
There's pics of:
- Erkhet (in a separate enclosure)
- Valma
- And of course the Cubs (all four, but not all in the same picture)
- And also a short video clip

Welcome to the forum, SST!!! Great to have another pair of eyes at Helsinki Zoo
Thank you so much for the pictures of the cubs, they are so awesome!!! I wasn't as lucky as you the day before your visit, and I admit that I am a bit jealous....
Definitely must revisit within one week!

Re: Snow Leopards
Hi guys,
I have been travelling a bit this week, visiting two zoos in Finland.
For the first time ever I visited the Ranua Zoo, which is located in the Finnish Lapland. It took about ten hours to drive there, but it was worth it! Ranua Zoo is actually a wild animal park where the animals are kept in as natural surroundings as possible. Especially the enclosures of the bears, wolves and lynx are HUGE! Their brown bear Malla gave birth to one cub last winter, and everything went well until they came out from the nest in the spring. The mom started to behave aggressively towards the cub, and the zoo staff had to take the cub away and start to take care of her. The little bear girl is now doing fine, and it was heart melting to see her play in her own enclosure. She was so full of energy, she kept runnning around, stopping to play with something, then running again, stopping to look at her mom through the fence, hopping into her little pool, eating some apples, and then running again... She looked so happy and full of life! - I will post some pictures of her and the polar bears (the only ones in Finland) later on my FB page.
The second zoo was Ähtäri Zoo where I have visited three times before. They have also snow leopards; you may remember some of my earlier postings here. There used to be Shiri, the male, Shakira, the female, and their two sons Irbis and Jeti. This time I found only Shiri... I knew that Jeti had already moved to Pairi Daiza, Belgium, and Irbis moved to Wuppertal Zoo, Germany some weeks ago. What I did not know was that the mom Shakira had died only some days ago. I met an animal keeper, and she told that Shakira was having some medical treatment, but unfortunately it did not help, and she died. It was so sad to see only Shiri there; I wondered if he felt lonely:
