Update from J & A - 30th January.

Hi Everyone – I’m glad that someone has their eye on the ball! Reference our good friend Bob Eveleigh’s comment on the Blog with regard to Clawed and Notch of the Marsh Pride.

Bob is absolutely right about Notch – he starred in Big Cat Diary 2005 – that was Aug/Sept 2005 by which time Notch had lost his companion who was killed by three Paradise males – the same ones who we featured in Solo’s story (we filmed them advancing on a landmark hill overlooking Paradise Plain – we called it Solo’s Hill because Honey liked to rest up there as a safe place for Solo, and good vantage point. Interestingly (as Bob mentions) the three males did not stay on with the Marsh Pride – they headed south again. Why? Good question. Maybe they had their hands full looking after a single pride territory on Paradise. Dave Richards (then the Manager of Governors Camp) felt that the incident in which they killed Notch’s companion might have been a result of them being attracted to sounds played by a researcher who was counting lions at the time – this ‘Call-In’ technique is a handy way of attracting any lions in the vicinity to come out of the bushes (and making them visible and countable). The sounds in question might be those of ‘hyenas feeding on a kill’ (sometimes of other lions) – and of course male lions often investigate such noises in the hope of a free meal. This may have been what prompted the three Paradise males to venture north over Rhino Ridge to investigate – and on finding Notch’s companion attacked and killed him. Maybe they were already in the vicinity. We do not know for sure what actually took place and why.
So that left Notch on his own which is the way things remained until around June 2007 when three males took over the Marsh Pride and chased Notch and his 5 Boys away (there was some talk of a sixth male in addition to Notch down on Paradise but don’t know who that might have been).
Now the question is as Bob asks – were the three males that killed Notch’s companion in 2005 the same three males that took over the Marsh Pride in 2007? I could take a look at our footage from 2005 when the males were prowling Toto’s patch and try and figure out if Clawed and Romeo were among them. What I do remember about the three males of 2005 was that one was noticeably older.
I will write to my old chum Brian Jackman about the three 2007 males (Clawed, Romeo et al) – I do seem to remember him telling me that they had named one of them Pavarotti. Not sure if the other was named Scar. As you know the Brown Maned male who was Scruff’s companion in the Marsh Pride of 1998 was later to become Scar in Big Cat Diary 2000.
I know that Clawed and Romeo’s companion did not seem popular and got himself beaten up – he was spotted hanging out across the River in the Triangle at one point and in very bad shape – then disappeared. But interestingly the Marsh Pride has mainly attracted duos rather than trios – the trios tend to take over larger prides with more breeding females. The Marsh Pride operates optimally at 4-6 lionesses and when a younger generation of lionesses is raised this normally put too much pressure on resources forcing a split. So even if you see 8 or 9 lionesses in the Pride it doesn’t last long with friction breaking out between the older and younger generation of females – particularly when it comes time for the younger ones to breed. Then a simmering war can break out along Bila Shaka – the traditional birth place for the pride. When one group gets pushed out to the margins they often end up hanging around the windmill at the north end of the Musiara Marsh – either among the croton thickets or by burying themselves in the reedbeds. This has been the case with the 3 Graces at times when they split off. And then at the end of last year we witnessed the 4 three-year-old females split from the Marsh Pride (with Lispy). And so the cycle continues – more on that in The Truth About Lions on TV soon.
It will be interesting to see if Lispy rejoins her age-mates White Eye and Bibi (the 3 Graces (sometimes 2) joined up again with WE and Bibi in the dry season of 2010. Or will she decide to stay with her four younger relatives who have been wandering around Rhino Ridge with two young males. Will that work? Mostly, age mates stick together through thick and thin unless they get out of sync for a while due by breeding at different times.
Lets see! We will be in Mara from 13 to 20 Feb at Rekero Camp on the Talek – and for a few days before that at our base at Governors Camp. We can hardly wait to see the Marsh Pride again!

Update from 2nd February

Pavorotti the Lion King

I asked Brian Jackman (my co-author of The Marsh Lions 1982) about the three Marsh Pride males Clawed, Romeo and their companion who took over the Marsh Pride in June 2007 – and whether or not they had been known by other names, in particular was one of them known as Pavorotti. Here is what he replies:

“This goes back to that time I came out to the Mara during the post-election troubles (late 2008) and ended up at Little Governors. We went out one day with Aris Grammaticus (owner and founder of Governors Camp) and while skirting around lower end of Rhino Ridge where it overlooks Musiara etc, came across this wonderful old pride male. With his big black mane and tremendous lung power (obligingly he roared for us until the sides of our vehicle almost shook), I jokingly suggested to Aris that he should call him Pavorotti. “Great,” said Aris, that’s what we’ll call him.” No doubt he had other names as well, but for us he’ll always be Pavorotti. We must have pix of him somewhere – but God knows where!.”

It's hard keeping up with these lions dont you think Doogs? so many to follow and with different names and then splitting into different prides!

I think someone needs to write a book lol! just on the lions in the Mara.

Update 7 February 2011 :-

Chaos here – trying to pack for three trips at once: Mara (10 to 21 Feb), India and Bhutan (Feb 27 to 3 April). The contrasts could not be greater – will it be hot or cold in Bhutan in March, how to manage with weight restrictions, and what to leave behind when it comes to camera equipment?

We are just finalising details of The Scotts’ Travel Club too – and a lot of the answers to the kind of questions I pose to you above will be answered there!

While Angie has been preparing the images for lectures for our trips I have been writing up details on Kenya for the Travel Club. It has been a journey down memory lane for me remembering what it was like to head out on safari to Kenya’s hot spots of 30 years ago – visits to Treetops and the Ark, Mt Kenya Safari Club perhaps, the Norfolk Hotel for lunch, and the New Stanley Hotel’s Thorn Tree Cafe to catch the vibe of the city center.

So much has changed – you rarely see visitors walking on the streets in downtown Nairobi these days, and no one asks you if ‘you want to change money?’ or ‘you want elephant hair bracelet?’ Exchange control has gone (and with it the thriving black market in foreign currency), and you haven’t been able to buy (legally) wildlife curios since 1977. Yet if you are careful and leave your valuables in the hotel safe or at reception before you set out, you can still enjoy rubbing shoulders with the locals on the streets and will always be assured of a warm welcome wherever you go in Kenya.

Yesterday we relaxed with our daughter Alia over lunch in our beautiful garden and thought to ourselves how very lucky we are to live in Kenya. Tree hyrax have taken up residence in the treetops by the house – and in the gutters – and screech their heads off at night to proclaim their territory, but we are used to their ear piercing screams and don’t let it stop us from sleeping. Little Cat loves stuff happening and has become a bit of a hyrax groupie. She is just fascinated by these rabbit shaped animals – bigger than her and with teeth to match. She spends hours watching them from the roof top or from Angie’s studio where they climb on the burgenvilia (sp?) on the trellis. She is just loves to be involved – the great watcher from the shadows.

Another update today, camera orientated :-

Hi Everyone – here is some exciting news for all Canon camera users:

General press release

http://www.canon-europe.com/About_Us/Press_Centre/Press_Releases/Consumer_News/Cameras_Accessories/20110207_DSLR_EOS_Range.aspx

EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4× in development

http://www.canon-europe.com/About_Us/Press_Centre/Press_Releases/Consumer_News/Cameras_Accessories/20110207_EF_200-400mm_lens.aspx

EF 500mm F/4L IS II USM and EF 600mm F/4L IS II USM launched

http://www.canon-europe.com/About_Us/Press_Centre/Press_Releases/Consumer_News/Cameras_Accessories/20110207_EF_500mm_and_600mm_lenses.aspx

Speedlite 320EX and Speedlite 270EX II launched

We have been longing for Canon to replace their popular EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS zoom lens. That lens was great for people coming on safari who wanted the extra reach this offered for wildlife photography. But we never felt it was as good as we needed. Some of these particular lenses were pin sharp – some however were indifferent by comparison to other L series lenses. The push-pull zoom dragged in dust and the lens just wasn’t as robust as most professionals needed. So at last the answer is here – well, not quite. We very much doubt if we will see the lens in the shops for a while yet – I’m betting a year from now but we will find out more about that asp. And what an interesting twist to the tale – a x 1.4 Extender is built in to the 200-400mm zoom!

Aside from this. You will no doubt already know about the new, lighter, even sharper 500mm f/4 L IS telephoto lens and the 600mm f/4 L IS telephoto – can’t wait to try those out either. And then there is the new 8-15mm fisheye and the new Series 3 Extenders – x2 and x1.4. These new Extenders are a must. They are said to be very sharp and optically superior to their predecessors.

Start saving!

Thanks Lai, hadn't seen this update.

The old girl of the Marsh Pride, White Eye is apparently 13 years young this year cheers Very interesting to read about the slow down/menopause type effect in lionesses at around 14 years.

Sounds like them seeing 3 of Notch's sons was some sight Jonathan & Angela Scott's Blog - Page 4 853843

Thanks for the nudge Lai. I checked on Sunday, but they had'nt updated then, for news on the dead Lioness, according to Simons post on the 5th Feb, a Lioness was speared by the Maisi, at the time it was thought to be White Eye. As was posted on a different topic, it now appears to be Lispy

Update from J&A dated 2 April 2011 :-

Hi Everyone,

Apologies for the long silence. We have just come to the end of an amazing journey through India and Bhutan – 5 weeks on the road in all – and head from an overnight in Delhi to Mumbai later today, then on to Nairobi early morning tomorrow. It will be nice to be back in our own beds again, though have to admit we have been sleeping in some very comfortable ones along the way!

On the back of our travels we hope to lead two small groups to this part of the world in 2012. One will be in March/April to Bhutan to witness the Para Festival and the other to India at the end of October/early Nov 2012 for a trip based around the Pushkar Camel Festival in Rajasthan and including a visit to Ranthambhore NP and other exciting places in this most colourful of Indian states. Both places offer wonderful photographic opportunities. More on all of this later – the maximum number of people on each of these trips will be 8 plus ourselves so you will need to let us know asp if you are interested in knowing more.

It has been lovely to hear from so many people who managed to watch The Truth About Lions at the end of March. Seems that people liked what they saw which is always encouraging. Still no news on Big Cat Diary – though we did hear that in a recent census put out to people about what Brands first came to mind when they thought about wildlife progammes – Big Cat Diary was first in 4 out of 5 cases along with Human Planet which people also thoroughly enjoyed. By the way you can look on line at a site the BBC have set up which features highlights from our favourite Big Cat Diary moments: http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/collections/p00db3b8#p00fqhnt We will add the link to The Scotts’ Travel Club as soon as we can.

We will hardly have unpacked our bags at the end of this trip before leaving home again on 10 April for the UK/Portugal. We are away until the 21 April. We are speaking at a Festival in Belfast on the 14 April before flying to Portugal to speak in Lisbon at a Canon event on 15/16 April.

In May we are back in the Mara and will be able to update you on who is still alive and well in the Marsh Pride. Need to follow up on reports that two lionesses were lost from among the three old females (White Eye, Bibi and Lispy) and the Three Graces. Anxious to see how Clawed is doing. Can’t believe he can survive much longer – the wet season is always tough finding enough food for all the pride – they often have to move further north and east beyond their dry season territory – out of the Reserve at times – and can run into trouble with other lions and the Masai. And of course there is always the chance of loses among the pride when the Masai bring their livestock into the Reserve and into Marsh Pride territory – day or night (often it is at night).

We are off to Sri Lanka (sorry about the Cricket World Cup guys – but congratulations to India!) at the end of June/early July for a recce trip for future hosted groups. A friend from that part of the world Charith Saranapalah who lives in London and travelled to Antarctica with us was just in Yala NP in Sir Lanka and got some lovely leopard and sloth bear images.

Don’t forget that you can join us at Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia in November for a hosted trip with ourselves and the legendary ex Warden and naturalist from South Luangwa NP Phil Berry – a real gentleman. 12 pax maximum.

Must away and answer some emails!

Warm regards to you all from Angie and me.
