Giraffe in Camp

You don't even have to go on safari to see game here...we currently have a family of giraffe grazing outside the dining tent. The youngest member of the family is no older than 3/4 months. If any of you stayed in tents 29-37, and were here right now, you might have a few guests on your veranda!

A Very Mara Safari !

These photos were sent to us by recent client Sue Lawless and really give a flavour of the animals you are likely to see on a Governors Safari at this time of year. Sue and Rhys have stayed with us many times and it is always a pleasure to host them on safari in the Mara. Sue wrote to us to say "Many thanks for another wonderful stay at Governors Camp. We had a fantastic time, and saw the most amazing things. But my favourite was the baby hyena - so cute !" Many thanks to Sue and Rhys for sharing their wonderful photos with us.

Marsh Pride Mound

Yesterday I was lucky enough to find 11 members of the Marsh Pride sitting on a termite mound. As if that wasn't enough, while we watched Scar Face came and sat near by, looking in great condition! Identifying who was there was difficult as they were all asleep, but one of the Sub-adult males was being particularly photogenic. Taking a leaf out of Scars book...

My Time at Governors

I leave Governors' and the Mara tomorrow for the last time, and have put together a collection of some of my favourite images from my time here. I first came to the Mara in October 2012, and started at Governors in December that same year. I've been lucky enough to see some incredible things, and to be able to spend so much time with the amazing Big Cats the Mara has on offer. A huge thank you to Governors for looking after me so well over the last 15 months, and to all the guests who had to put up with me in the front of their safari cars! I will miss the Mara hugely, but luckily return in April for 2 nights with my family...looking forward to it already!

I move on to Tanzania and the Serengeti now, and to see more of my work follow me here: https://www.facebook.com/willfortescuephotography

Jicho's three cubs on walkabout with mum and the boys get a meal

Early this morning Jicho brought down a zebra, there are hundreds of thousands of them around at the moment with the arrival of the loita migration, we encountered them leaving the kill site Jicho with her cubs in tow, moving them back to the safety of the Marsh. Along the way they passed a lone buffalo and Jicho was keen to keep the cubs moving constantly calling to them. Scar and the three other Musketeers were all not to far from one another as Kini another break-away lioness (who let her cub go and was taken on by Lippy) is in Oestrus and it looks like Sikio is the one mating although they are all close by. There were five Black Backed Jackals on the remains of the Zebra and when Scar turned up there was nothing left except scraps. His wound has healed nicely although it still has a lump. watching Scar walk slowly towards were the remains of this kill, we then suddenly saw a spotted Hyena walking slowly down from the east with a small leg bone in its mouth, it was amazing how quickly Scar saw this and literally lay low and used our car as cover and chased it,but the hyena out ran him and was off. Who am I ? And what am I up to?

This magnificent male turned up close to Governors Camp this morning, our guides and guests had a first sighting of him on this mornings game drive, he is moving dangerously close to the Marsh Pride's territory and has picked up a breakaway lone female along the way, if he is not careful he may get into trouble with the 4 musketeers… exciting day ahead in the Mara today as we wait to see what unfolds. Photos courtesy of guest Holger Franke, many thanks to Holger for sharing these with us.

So thats what you're up to!

New male's intentions made very clear.. lets hope he stays clear of Hunter, Morani, Scar and Sikio, they certainly won't like what he's been up to. Photos from one hour ago courtesy of Holger Franke. Many thanks to Holger for sharing these with us.

KWS Vet arrives to treat 2 lionesses

Two days ago the Kenya Wildlife Services vet and assistants as well as those from David Sheldrick wildlife trust arrived in the Musiara area after we alerted them that the lioness Musiara seemed to be suffering with an injury on her tummy. We directed them to where the four breakaway lionesses Musiara, Lippy, Kini, Sila and the three cubs were very lying under a Balanites aegyptiaca tree not far from the Musiara Airstrip. In the meantime the pride members and cubs decided to leave the tree before Musiara was to be darted, this proved to be perfect. While the vet and his assistant were getting their medication ready all the lions decided to return, then the female cub Akili (the rescued cub). Recognized the vehicle who had carried her she then got up and left the pride and started to walk away, this then brought all the others away!!

The other two Females Lippy and Kini came back to Musiara when she was darted and went down. The wound was superficial only looks like it was caused by an antelope horn whilst hunting, it was infected so the vet cleaned it out and treated with an antibiotic.

The following afternoon at approximately 3.30pm another breakaway lioness was treated near the Bila Shaka riverbed, she had a nasty gash over her right eye and deep scratch marks over the lower section of her body, she was treated and cleaned up, the eye appears to have been damaged too deep, the vet said she may likely loose the sight of that eye. This was the result of a fight between two prides.

This stay changed my life

These photos were sent to us by Holger Franke who just came on safari with us. Holger wrote to us to say “Thank you so much! A few words can’t describe my experience. I came to Governors for the first time in August, I had no idea about the camp and the wonderful Masai Mara. Now, in March 2014, it was my second stay. My return was like coming home. I was so surprised that so many people remembered me. Thanks to the wonderful manager Peter, who become my friend. Thanks to all of the lovely staff at Governors. You make this place so special for me. And very special thanks to my friend Hassan. He is so much more than a guide for me. I learned so many things from him. About nature and the landscape - and maybe about myself. Really every day of my eight days was different than the day before. Hassan showed me his world and opened my eyes for it. In Europe we believe we live in a perfect world. With so many things we don’t really need. My stay at Governors Camp opened my eyes to the things which are really important in life: the purity and beauty of nature. Thank you all for what you did for me. This stay changed my life. See you all again soon - in August 2014. Thanks a lot.“

Many thanks to Holger for sharing his wonderful photos with us. Enjoy the Mara in March through Holger's lens.

Two leopards seen yesterday morning, the female just about to cross a body of water and the male walking in the long grass.

There are a few young giraffe now and this one photo was taken on Paradise plains. There will be more giraffe giving birth soon, with a 15 month gestation the giraffe calves falls down five foot with the mother giving birth while standing.

Scar was seen within the Musiara area while Morani pictured was seen on Paradise plains.

Good numbers of Zebra still on Rhino Ridge, Musiara plains, Topi plains and a few scattered herds within the Marsh and north Masai conservation areas.

Lions in Camp and close to the Marsh

There was great excitement in Governors Camp on Friday as Marsh Pride lioness Lippy hid her cubs right behind tent 37, leaving them to go hunting and returning for them later. As the lions were so close we had to move the honeymoon couple out of the tent and to the Justus suite. The next day the cubs were gone, although our askaris (night guards) noted lots of coming and going of the lionesses through the night.

Then yesterday Lippy’s cubs and Jicho’s cubs all came together with little fuss.In the late afternoon they were separated again when Lippy left her three cubs on a termite mound while she went off across the other side of the Marsh. Jicho also moved away while her one cub followed her, all of yesterday the second cub still had not been seen. Lippy has a habit of leaving her cubs while she goes hunting. Buffalo bulls pictured who were nearby pose a threat to lion cubs.

The paradise male Leopard was seen up a Warburgia tree in the morning while Romi was seen in the evening by the BBC campsite.

Moja the male lion was on Topi plains and his mother Nyota was nearby, extraordinary behavior between these two lion.

All lions at the Marsh this morning

Yesterday evening Lippy, Kini and Jicho were all together by the marsh with all four cubs playing amongst each other. It now looks like Jicho has only one cub, we are not sure what happened to the second one.

Early this morning Siena with her three cubs, nine sub-adults, Charm and Bibi were at the Marsh with a zebra kill 20 meters away from where Jicho and the cubs were yesterday evening. Jicho, Kini and Lippy had also killed a zebra early this morning not far from where the core members of the Marsh Pride were feeding, by 7.00am Jicho had moved the cubs further away perhaps to avoid unnecessary 'feline politics'.

These great photos are courtesy of Will Fortescue, Will worked with us for a few months and then just brought his whole family on safari. Will wrote to us to say "Thanks so much for a great few months with Governors, and this has capped it off brilliantly. My family came down for 2 nights, and within 24 hours had seen the Big 5! An incredible sighting of Romi and her cub on the first night, and even managed to see a Rhino on the Musiara side of the river! Ntuala couldn't have been nicer and we cannot thank the rest of the staff enough! "
