Re: Hummingbird cam - Phoebe
I will try and get back to Emma and her eggs later this evening, if time allows. She has raised a few clutches and her nest looks far more secure than Phoebes, not sure about what other birds are around though, so not sure if the danger is around Emma or not.
The cam is brilliant with the focus so it really is a nice one to watch.

Re: Hummingbird cam - Phoebe
How about this guy's, Emma is fostering two hummingbirds I think anyway she is definiately sitting on her own nest and now has another nest next to her with two babies in, not sure what hapened to their mum but Emma has accepted them and is feeding them as well as brooding her own clutch, what a star she is. I will try and find out more about this story.

LW How'd that happen, I wonder if someones moved the nest next to hers, you just dont get nests that close. I will have a look at the chat as I'm signed up to ustream

Re: Hummingbird cam - Phoebe
This is quite amazing guy's and I hope it works out for them all.
WS very kindly found this out on ustream last night.
ORPHAN RECAP:
Monique, CALadyDi's local hummingbird rehabber contacted Diane about about a nest that was accidentally cut down, then found with new babies in it and no mom to be found. The babies appear to have been born 5/17 and 5/18. There were still egg shells in the nest. Monique currently has the babies and is attempting to stabilize and care for them.
With them being as young as they are, there are grave concerns about their immature digestive systems. What the babies need for survival is a mother hummingbird to feed them, not a human.
It's been discussed and decided that we take steps to put up a nest next to Emma's current nest, to get her "used to it", then we will replace that nest with the orphan babies' nest. We will press the two nests together closely, but they will still remain separate. (Much like we did with Hope's nest). Ideally, she'll be able sit on the eggs (continuing their incubation) and be willing to feed the babies at least until they're about 9 days old, when their chance of survival with human feeding are much, much greater.
Are we positive this is going to work? Nope. This type of thing is unprecedented at this time. We are taking this all one step at a time.
The orphan's crops appear to be emptying at the present time, and they are staying alive, but the chance of continued survival diminishes as time progresses.
We will NOT jeopardize the eggs in any way. And this is all being done with much care of supervision of trained people. The orphans' chance for survival if we do nothing, is very very slim. If Emma can help (like she did for Hope), this is worth a shot, right? It just doesn't seem fair to sit by and do NOTHING.

You did well to capture those ones WS, how lovely they are. This really is going to be exciting to see these two being nurtured by Emma. I will check in on them again later this evening.

Re: Hummingbird cam - Phoebe
From the chat it looks as though the babies got cold last night and were not responding well this morning, so they have been removed and taken to a rehaber with th hope of returning them to Emma tomorrow, apparantly they are doing ok at the moment. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Re: Hummingbird cam - Phoebe
It's still night time there, this is from Emmas FB Page
Emma The Hummingbird/Emma's Nest/World of Hummingbirds (NEW!)
14 hours ago.The babies are back in the care of the rehabber for probably the rest of today (and through tonight) and be returned to Emma's care tomorrow morning once it warms up a bit outside. (Our guess is about 10am). It was good to see plenty of dark bugs in their crops this morning (only Emma can do that) and hopefully that will last them throughout most of the day today. From here forward, they'll be brought in during the evening hours. More updates as they develop! And thanks so much to everyone for your support! Please continue to keep Phil and Mia in your thoughts and prayers! xo-Di

Thanks for the update WS. Phil and Mia are still with the rehabber at the moment and Emma is on her eggs.
Thanks for the FB link WS and I will check Emma and the chicks again later, as I know you will too, I know we are both trying to keep a good eye on whats happening.

Re: Hummingbird cam - Phoebe
Just checked on Emma and Phil and Mia are back in the nest next to Emma
As soon as Emma flew back in the were sitting up and straining for food and wobbling all over, hence the fuzzy picture but Emma wasn't feeding this time.
