Re: Amur Tiger
On my visit to Helsinki Zoo last Sunday I was happy to see Lara once more.
Here she is taking it easy:
... and more easy:
When she woke up, she ROARED, and I can tell you she is a very loud lady!

Amur tiger released back into the wild
14/05/2013 10:10:42
May 2013. There is some great news from the Russian Far East; the tiger cub that The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) and TigerTime supporters rallied to help has been released back into the wild. On May 9, 2013, the young tigress, who had been found orphaned in 2012, was returned back to the wild in Bastak Nature Reserve, Jewish Autonomous Province.
Cinderella, as the tigress is now known, weighing a healthy 94 kg, was very active and it took more than two hours before the specialists could immobilize her with a tranquillizer dart. They checked her teeth, took her temperature, blood and other samples to test for disease, before transporting her to Bastak Nature Reserve

Re: Amur Tiger
Here are my latest pictures of Lara from last Tuesday - nothing special, I was just happy to see her once more!
Now that Czar is gone, Lara has both (quite large) tiger enclosures in her use, and she was moving so fast from one to the other that I almost had to run to get any photo of her.

Re: Amur Tiger
Lovely pics CC, it does seem a shame she's on her own. Are there any plans to bring another male in do you know ?

Re: Amur Tiger
Yes, I think she is lonely too.
There will be no new male for her. Lara will move to Krakow Zoo and start a new life in the breeding programme. The tigers' enclosures here will be renovated, and after that there will be new couple and hopefully cubs some day.

Re: Amur Tiger
Guess what! I think I am in love
Last Saturday at Tallinn Zoo...
I met this young male: his name is Pootsman, he is extremely handsome, very strong, weighs nearly 500 kg, and when he stands up, he is about 2.5-3 metres tall. And he is not just any tiger but a gorgeouos Amur Tiger!
Pootsman came to Tallinn in the end of last year from a wildlife park near Moscow. They said he had not been in contact with humans before that. His parents are both from the wild, which makes him even more precious.
One of the first things Pootsman did in Tallinn was trying to escape. The keeper told us how she went into the building one morning and soon noticed that the net between Pootsman's room and the corridor had been torn broken and Pootsman was not where he should have been. I can only imagine how scared she was when she realised that she was in the same space with him.
Now the fences of Pootsman's enclosures have been repaired and renewed. Unfortunately he cannot be on exhibit yet; the zoo is keeping him in the background space where the visitors are not allowed (we were lucky enough to go and see him as special guests) until they have strengthened the fences of the exhibit enclosure, just to make sure that the visitors stay safe.
When we first saw Pootsman, he was up on his deck finishing his lunch. He had a huge chunk of meat betweeen his paws, and we could hear the bones cracking under his teeth.
At the same time he was staring at us. Maybe it was just curiousity, but if you ever have been in eye contact with a huge tiger at a couple of meters distance, you can figure out how it feels.
A little later we went to see him again. He was now lying on the ground near the fence. Remember I told you about the elderly keeper who had been working at Tallinn Zoo for 50 years? She is a true animal whisperer, as she knows how to communicate with different species. She is probably the only person who can touch Pootsman; he just looked at her with gentle eyes as she came close to him next to the fence.
There was also a man who had been on the spot when Pootsman arrived. Obviously Pootsman remembers him from the unpleasant situation when he was in the transport box, as he seemed to be very suspicious and even angry when he saw the man. Pootsman's eyes followed his every move, and we could hear him growling. When he came a little closer, Pootsman roared and showed us what he thinks about the man:
My heart almost stopped!
The zoo has also a female Amur Tiger, but she is already 15 years old. I guess they are searching for a younger female for breeding, but there is still time as Pootsman is only two years old now.
More pictures in my Tallinna Loomaaed album on my FB wall.

Re: Amur Tiger
Your in Love CC! I have just fallen head over heels for him too, what a spectacular boy he is and he is massive too by the looks of him. I will admit right here and now I am very jealous of you, so excited and pleased you were able to see him and get these amazing shots but boy I would have loved to have been with you.
Your photo's are stunning and I can imagine the bone crunching from the first picture but that second photo is gorgeous, if you had never seen a Tiger before you would instantly fall in love with them he is a fantastic ambassador for Tigers. You can see the gentleness in his eyes with the lady in the photo, his whole demeanor has changed form the first picture and also the massive roar photo when he saw the man again.
This post has just ended my day perfectly even though I am green with envy.
I must catch up on all your photos on FB CC. But for now, thank you so much for sharing those pictures of Pootsman

Re: Amur Tiger
We were at the zoo again last Friday - they were open longer than usually, as they closed at 10 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. I wanted to see if the animals would really start a party or something after the visiting hours.
It was worth it: we saw the lions do something else than just sleeping, we met a beautiful male lynx who is a newcomer from last spring... They also have an older lynx who turned 20 years in May! But I had not seen this young one before; I hope that they will also have a girlfriend for him in the future.
And I also saw something that I have never seen in our zoo before: Lara went to the pool! The water is too low for swimming, but she seemingly enjoyed just lying there. I think I have to share this remarkable moment with you:

Re: Amur Tiger
That sounds like a wonderful evening visit CC. A girlfriend for the young Lynx would be good. 20 is some age for a Lynx isn't it, I wonder if thats because he is in captivity?
what a stunning photo of Lara she looks very relaxed and happy in her pool there doesn't she.
There is a Male Tiger at Marwell Zoo and he has a nice pond too and he loved it. I am sure I posted a picture of him on here somewhere, I will have to find it for you but I dont think it's a very good picture though.

CC I cant find the thread I posted these on as it was simply ages ago but I have found the pics. They re not very good as they are on an old digi cam but at least you can see him. He was lovely.
One minute he was at the back then with like two strides he was on top of the glass
and I missed his face
Again sorry for the poor quality but he was a smashing fellow.
